Seriously, if anyone thinks imputed income is an industry normal, please name some other airlines that are doing the same? Name another company (outside of aviation) that does imputed income to its employees?

One online CPA source says it this way referencing a company-owned car: “When an employee uses a company vehicle for business purposes, the vehicle use is a working condition fringe benefit. This means the value of using the vehicle isn’t included in the employee’s income, nor is it taxed.

But, when an employee uses a company vehicle for personal reasons, you generally must include the value of using the vehicle in the employee’s income. And, you must withhold taxes on the value of the benefit.”

Furthermore, “The IRS defines imputed income as the value of any benefits or services provided to an employee. The value of this cash or non-cash compensation must be considered in order to accurately reflect an individual’s taxable income.

Employees can have income tax withheld for their imputed income or pay the amount due with their tax installment payments. Examples of imputed income are:

Dependent care assistance exceeding the tax-free amount,
Health and dental insurance for non-dependent domestic partners or same-sex partners or spouses,
Basic or group life insurance in excess of $50,000,
Personal use of company or employer-provided car,
Non-deductible moving expense reimbursements,
Educational assistance exceeding the excluded amount, and
Below market rate loans.“

I get it. It’s in the contract and that the company does it but my question is why do the Atlas pilots continue to show up for work of their income is being “imputed” to the point of poverty? At this point, you have to question the decision making of anyone that shows up to work under those rules because it just perpetuates managements ability to keep doing it.

Almost everyone is hiring....

(I don’t work for Atlas, nor do I have a dog in the fight, I just don’t understand why good pilots continue to be shat upon by a company like this?)
Because you get to tell all your youtube followers that you fly a 747!!!

A lot of airlines (as far as I know) won't buy you a ticket to your domicile or a hotel room while you're there. Sure, it would be better to have home basing, but you don't, and this seems preferable to an airline that expects you to report for duty in your domicile completely on your own tab.
Good thing you are not a tax man.. this behavior is completely unnecessary.

"Punitive" is your term. Our term is that this is a "fact" of flying at Atlas. That fact and so many others makes our compensation package at Atlas suck which is why we are in an epic battle to get a decent contract.

Atlas uses gateway travel as bait for new hires and as a sword during negotiations. Obviously the bait works for some pilots who either don't believe that it is possible that a 747 pilot's paycheck can be less than $1,000 or are just so awestruck about flying a big jet that they don't care. Like you, Atlas considers gateway to be a huge benefit but, as so many have professed here, it really isn't. You obviously know about home basing and the benefits of that program. So given the choice of 1. Industry contract, or 2. Home basing, or 3. Gateway; Gateway is by far the worst option. It is a system that is set up to undervalue and undercompensate pilots - grossly!

So, yes, imputed income is legally required and charged by Atlas (although it is selectively enforced and frequently overcharged).

The better question is why someone would choose Atlas over an airlines that have true home basing (airlines that, by the way, also pay more and have better work rules).

Fewer and fewer pilots are staying at Atlas.

The latest chart shows an average of 200 pilots a year leaving for greener pastures. Of those who haven't left yet, a vast majority have applications out and plan to leave.

I can assure you that the decision making process of those who have not left is sound and they have chosen to stay and fight (or to fight until they move on!).

The decision making process that should be questioned is the one that leads pilots to make the decision to come to Atlas today.

Well does atlas have a commuter clause? No? So they force pilots to move to anc without any assistance. Then if you do move it’s only a matter of time before you want to make more money and upgrade to the 767 captain which will require you to move back to the lower 48. If you don’t move to anc you will be forced for them to pay or you to pay for your plane ticket. Airlines are the one job where you don’t get to pick where you live until after you start working which is why even regionals have commuter clauses and some even give hotels.

OK, I wasn't aware that it's not consistent. Agreed that it should be consistently applied.

This is because: Aviation organizations have Bases, Gateway Basing, or Home basing. Everybody uses ONE of the above: Delta has Bases. NetJets has Gateway Basing (your Gateway is your base). Kalitta has Home Basing (your home is your base). Atlas, because of Cato, apparently, has Gateway Travel AND Bases. Atlas is THE ONLY organization that I have heard of that uses two or three of the above.

Because they have Gateway Travel, and Bases, then you are commuting between your Gateway, and your Base, if in fact that is what you do (often at Atlas, you don't go to your base to start and/or end your trip).

The union is trying to end this situation with the new contract, because it is not good.

I’m rooting for ya. I hope you all put a smack down on mgmt and get something truly worthwhile to make up for all the shenanigans.

Thanks for the support! But color me cynical.

This wouldn't be the first airline to get broken up and have it all blamed on the union.

As a pilot group unify, walk in and quit. Everyone of you, on the same day. All this crying with no action doesn’t bode well for you guys. You come across as imasculated, crybabies. Grow a pair and do something about it. Otherwise it must not be that bad.
