You’re killing me Knoxville. CaptDave, well done on making it all the way from 2007 to this point and keeping those non US experienced pilots out of the cockpit. We aren’t the best and it shows. I have a tough time keeping the GPWS from yelling “sink rate” on approaches too. Then again, I’ve been overseas where a caution or warning is par for the course. Keep up the good work Skipper. We’re all counting on you.

I’m tempted to leave my regional but am finding a lot of reasons to pump the brakes on this. Heavy time isnt worth being away 22 days a month for 61 hours(50 the first year). I like cargo but this is a far cry from any “mainline” cargo gig like UPS, Fedex. Are there guys that leapfrog to those places after flying here for a year or 2?

Am I missing something?
I don't think you are missing anything. It used to be better, more days off a month than required, longer layovers. But with the crew shortage it's min days off and more min rest coupled with more disgruntled crews and very below average pay to show for it. The only way to enjoy it to some degree is live in a junior base, but the pay is still what you described.

You can use it as a stepping stone at your own risk. Southern is having lots of dropouts/fails as is Atlas, but if you have a good attitude they may retrain you. Just know that pink slips most likely mean the stepping stone is now a career.

Day 0- Commute to CVG to LAX
DAY 1. CVG-Bahrain, mim rest
Day 2- BAH- Some hole in Asia, maybe 18 hours of rest
Day 3 Asia-CVG ( body clock is truly mucked ) give they guy a 24/7
Day 5- in a fog, but I can do this CVG-BAH, min rest
Day 6- damn, I feel like ****, how many more days to go, quick look at PCD, damn 12 more to go. Schedule change, BACK to CVG. 18 hours of rest
Day 7- CVG-LEG. What the ****.
Day 8- LEG- ASIA 24/7 ( happy ending ) because at this point, I feel like ****, and need something
Day 9- ASIA- CVG MIN REST
DAY 10- layover in CVG
DAY 11 CVG-BAH min rest what the hell did I do.
Day12- BAH- ASIA
DAY 13, ok, I can do this. Only a few more days to go! Oh ****, what’s this, what the ****, they just extended me 3 more days, plus a late commute home.
Day 14- 9 more days to go
Day 21- commute home
8 days off

Back out to do it all again.

Are you getting the picture ? If you don’t believe me, come see for yourself- the patterns are build non stop flying around the world with the absolute min rest the company can give you.

Come on, we are hiring. Come ruin your body clock with me!
A few corrections for boeingdvr as usual since he’s an Atlas pilot and not Southern. You will work long days, fly ALOT, and be tired. Leipzig is LEJ, Asia means Hong Kong (HKG) or Incheon (ICN). Most layovers are 24 hours but some are less. You will most likely fly at least 2 laps around the planet if not 3.....and then have a good chance of being extended.

Well for one thing I’m sitting in a bunkbed in my nyc crashpad that I’ve been using to commute to reserve for the last 3 months. There’s only 7 other pilots that share the same room, 2 that snore. I never said it was great but there could be worse. I once knew 2 pilots that were homeless. They worked all the time because it got them hotels to sleep in rather than their cars.

No thanks, I’m not interested in that. Sounds more like a trap door than a good stepping stone. I had my suspicions and this confirmed alot of them.

Sorry to rain on your pity party but I would love to have this schedule. Would be very serious money involved. If I get too tired I call fatigue. FAA is very supportive of that right now. You forget to mention that you sleep on the plane also. CVG-BAH is 15 hrs, so double crew required, giving each pilot 6 plus hours off. There are plenty of valid reasons to not be at AAWW right now but the nature of ACMI flying should not be one if you have done your research. Doesn’t AAWW follow the more favorable rest rules?

If you mean part 117 Atlas is required to follow 117 rules for passenger flights. Cargo flights still fall under 121 rules.
