If you're in the pool, there are ways to maintain currency and competency without taking a flying job someplace. You essentially have a golden ticket that thousands of us are trying to get. Pursuing any kind of additional aviation job is a lot of long-term risk for very little short-term rewards.
If you feel confident passing training at either of these places (Atlas or PSA) you'll pass training at UPS. If you feel like you need to build your skills, then you definitely don't want to do that at a carrier which could derail your position at UPS.
So why take the risk? There are lots of avenues to pay your bills that won't hazard your UPS job.

I do have a great f-18 flying job with the navy reserves and I plan to do a few months full time with them in the hopes UPS calls.. . but that is not long term... and non flying jobs are no where near as compatible with the navy reserve job that requires 9 days a month on average .

Up to 4-5 years ago hiring was mostly horizontal and now it’s mostly vertical.
Hiring straight out of turbo props.
The 74 being your first jet is a big step
So it’s to be expected to see a higher fail rate when hiring with less and less experience.
It’s also a matter of hiring the lesser motivated as the “market is good anyway”.

You have to see that higher fail rate in context.

Me, as well
As transitioning to part 121 flying. does anyone have any experience either first or second hand of mil guys doing atlas /southern training

I was a mil heavy guy with 6500hrs. Paroled from Atlas 747 3 years ago but from what I understand the training hasn’t changed much. Firehose without much guidance. Here’s the books, learn these. Don’t take it lightly and be ready to feel inadequate. Failing a formal course on your record won’t help. As the saying went, the check rides are solo but the actual jet is a crew. You get a captain type check ride so you’re expected to do everything a captain is responsible for. I still have friends there and it’s only gotten worse. If you need the hours and heavy jet time then fine. But have your apps updated and be ready for another interview. Stay away from the 76 if they try to bait and switch to that. You won’t get many hours in the jet. Just lots of time sitting reserve.

That being said, you may be missing an important point. You (or your sim partner) happen to have a bad day on your type ride (we ALL have bad days regardless of backgrounds) and you lose your place in the pool at Brown as well as making it challenging to even get an interview anywhere else.
I highly recommend doing everything possible to just mark time until you get your UPS class date. Instruct at your local flight school, work at Home Depot, whatever. Just don’t jeopardize your job offer...

I’m a retired single seat guy at Atlas. As former mil, you’ll be familiar with the training. It’s not spoon fed. You have to study, plan, and do the work. The morale is as bad here as the frequent posters state.
