No need for interview gouge, very relaxed interview (3 weeks ago)

Curious is all, but how has COVID affected you guys? Have y’all slowed down any? Still hiring? Present and future plans the company has in the works?

Big class of 20 starting tomorrow May 11. Congrats to all! Apparently there was lots of current & qualified in the pool to chose from!

I have read on here that Amerijet has changed a lot (for the better) over the past few years. Are trips still geared towards people who live in S. Florida?

Thanks!

AmeriJet has changed a lot, depending on who you ask is for the better or worse. It’s changing it’s business model from flying it’s own cargo to ACMI, some people are not happy about that.
With the ACMI flying we are getting virtual bases outside MIA, we opened SMF for USPS and CVG for DHL, and while we are all based in MIA they will fly you from your requested airport to those cities (normally you will be there for a couple weeks in a hotel while doing the flying)
The bidding for those virtual bases are awarded in seniority, and are going fairly senior (SMF anyway, CVG first award will be processed on May 13th)
Management is pursuing more ACMI flying possibly with more virtual bases
Hope this answers your question

Thanks Rocketman - yes, very helpful. So a very junior pilot would still probably be MIA based, doing island turns?

Elevation 05-11-2020 07:49 AM

Interesting. I didn't know Amerijet was coming to fly DHL, but it makes sense.

I saw them yesterday at CVG.

AJT is a different airline with different owners. The Caribbean stuff was always heavily subsidized by oil equipment going into a few stations. Heard most of that is gone. The rest were probably money losers. Back in the old days, AJT didn't have customers per say, they had "hostages". The Cargo bazaar that was Miami (including other operators) would take freight and either hold it until it there was enough to warrant a flight, or possibly even send it when it was promised. It was not uncommon to deliver Christmas trees in January. Electronics and cell phones? One time a full container disappeared driving the one block from the warehouse. A lot of businesses probably thrived on 72nd Ave. from pinched goods.

With the new IBT contract, AJT seems to be able to attract people with long haul and ETOPS experience. They are finding a niche and generating money. I hope all goes well for them.

True! AJT was once part of the now infamous “MIA corrosion corner”

I remember their 727s at Melville Hall in Dominica.

HeloGuy 05-14-2020 06:50 AM

Anyone gotten any response from their last application window? It is closed now, but I know it was open through the end of April.

Kerizbro 06-17-2020 11:02 AM

Is it possible for a new hire to only do the island turns?

What do you guys normally credit per month?

Truly hard to say
First you don’t bid for trips or lines, just days off
Second AJT is shifting its flying from the Caribbean and Central America to overseas flying (email come out yesterday saying 52% of our flying in July will be ETOPS)
While we don’t bid for trips or lines, the temporary bases (currently Sacramento and Cincinnati)were the non Caribbean flying is done is normally by bidding and goes fairly senior, so there is a chance junior people will be “stuck” flying the Caribbean out of Miami
It’s just hard to say for how long things will stay like that
Base pay is 60 hours, Miami based lines have around 40 hours (+/-) and anything you pick up from open time is above the 60 hours.

How many days off are you guys averaging with those kind of hours? Thanks in advance!

12 minimum in 28 days
Sometimes you might get 14 or 15 days scheduled off, but mostly you just might end up not working some of your scheduled reserve days
I had one month I only worked 6 days but only had 12 days off

Did anyone get called on last window that was closed a few days ago?

Agcat25 06-19-2020 05:52 AM

Does AJT fly SMF/CVG? If so, is it nonstop? Is it DHL and 5 days per wk?

I’m based in CVG and live in the Sacramento area so it could be a convenient Jumpseat.

Thank you for any info

The flight goes from SMF to PHL and back, not CVG
CVG to EMA (England)

Very hard right now, they only had 3 positions open for July, I assume they are reserving the other 3 for IOE training
Don’t know how long will stay that way

Training in MIA, 3 weeks ground school, 2 weeks sim, all depending on availability of sims and instructors
Pay is full pay (guaranteed plus per diem, no paid hotel).

How’s the training department culture? Ball buster trial by fire type or reasonable? Thanks for the info.

Very relaxed, they all want you to succeed and they will work with you
“Cooperate, graduate “ seems to be the motto.
For me was the most enjoyable initial training I ever had (fourth airline and will be the last)

My understanding is that the only way to break guarantee is fly off days. Otherwise it’s 60 hours of pay a month rinse and repeat. Is that correct?

My rough math tells me a new hire without working days off would take home out $4800 a month per diem included. Does that sound like it’s in the ball park of reality?

Thanks for the feedback, have big decision coming up so it’s appreciated.

Interview Next week

I’ve also got an interview next week via Zoom. Current in Type, INTL, TPIC, current 121...Any idea on what to expect for the interview?
Any idea if home basing will be an opportunity in the future with the new flying contracts?

When I interviewed a year ago was very relaxed, no technical questions or anything, more of a “can I fly with him?”
Most pilots I talk with want home basing, not sure everybody knows what it is though

My buddy used Air BNB And wound up on 53rd floor overlooking Biscayne Bay. I stayed at the Candlewood on 36th. Also call the Aloft. They’ll offer a reduced rate for crew extended stay. Good luck.
