Default ANC Crash pad?

Anyone know of a crash pad in ANC? Been looking but no luck. Any help would be great.

Default crash pad

I know a ups captain up there and I am pretty sure that he has had other guys crash there before. I would be happy to ask him if you want.

Shaggy,

I don't think we make enough to afford a crash pad.

Shaggy,

I saw a couple of ANC crashpad ads in the IPA Flight Times classified section. You're probably going to need a beatermobile up there to get around. Good luck!

Thanks guys. I found a place for only three hundy! Arch it was from one of the two guys on the classifieds. He sent me pictures and the place looks great. I am looking into the car thing. I will be in the market for a beater mobile and have found two that I like on Craigs list. One for 1200 and the other for 1500. Will buy one when I am up there sitting reserve next week.

Marcusd I really don't know how long it takes for them to get back to you. I have seen from 4-6 weeks till 6 months. Hope you get some good news soon.

Default ANC beaters

Don't have a dog in this fight anymore, but I thought I'd pass on a few things I learned from ANC.

1. Don't buy the beater you'd buy in SDF or MEM. Its not going to be reliable enough for the winters in ANC. I was a mechanic for years. I know.

2. If you are still connected with the military, or are tight with someone who is, you can find some very good deals at the resale lot on Elmendorf AFB.

3. A great site for finding used cars in ANC is cars.adn.com.

4. If you are not going to live on a major road within the city of ANC, consider 4wd. It can snow a bit up there and the plows concentrate on the main city streets and big roads like the Glenn Highway.

5. If you buy a car near the end of its registration, be prepared to pay. A lot. If you find a car with recent registration/emissions inspection, it will be worth it in reduced hassle.

Good luck with ANC and watch out for the traffic around Koots on Friday!

Default How about the cab option?

For those of us hoping to minimize the time spent at ANC, has anyone used the taxi option to and from a crashpad? How about public transportation? I know they don't run around the clock, but do they go past the cargo (ok, brown) side of the airport?

Thanks

Hey Beaker I lived up there for twenty years. It really depends on were your crashpad is. If your crash pad is on the south side of town about 10 to 15 min away it about 20-25 dollar cab ride. The bus transportation mostly goes to down town and its to freaking cold in the winter to wait for that thing. Also the cargo area is kinda out on its own were the buses would not run. Good luck and watch out for the moose
