Economic Downturn: Atlas Air vs. Southern Air
#11
I’m probably home an extra 3-5 days/mo on average. Granted, I do a lot of the HNL flying that has layovers in RIV or ONT.

Atlas is like a box of chocolates, you never know what your gonna get. Pay check clears so that’s something, couple of airframes coming back to the 74 line - so there’s that, unknown future like most others in the pax industry- priceless. Well, not priceless, see our pay charts. Good thing is - I stayed in a holiday inn express last night, I’ve got this.

This is 747:
I have been mostly based in JFK/ORD. My normal schedule is between 6-16 days. I have had a lot of trips from 3-5 days long. I just did a 14 day trip. 14 days off now, then work to the end of the month...about a 9 day trip. Typical.
If you live in ANC/LAX and are based there, you may be home some days during your work pattern. If you live in MIA, you can be home a lot.
Flying for Atlas is like flying for a number of different organizations, because it depends on the airframe/base as to what your schedules will be, how much you will fly, and how much you will be home.

can anyone post some of the trips in open time for the Miami 747?

Since the beginning of this month, saw only 1 Capt OT out of Miami. No FO, other bases mostly ANC, some JFK and some ORD plus All Base OT. May have missed more with a quick look. Is this a bidding question if hired by Atlas? My guess it would be pretty senior and actually weird due to odd requirements right now.
Jumpseat question if that’s even possible due to cross-contamination issues going on so that’s out I think. Miami Pros, anyone!

A new hire today- will likely never see MIA 747. Let alone get any OT on the 747.
Our airline hasn’t grown that much over the years, especially the 747. OT on the 747 goes fast, senior, and deals are made.

Guys
stop propping up these dogs!t places—let them die their natural death, and good riddance.
If you didn’t know you needed a backup career, now you do. I attempted to explain that concept to the skinny jean wearing a$$clown that “interviewed” me at Envoy 2 years ago, ( I had already received 2 other offers before I walked in there). Those on top today can easily find themselves on the street tomorrow. I’ll bet he’s had some time to reflect on that. An Eastern L1011 Ca told me that when I was a noob back in 1991. He had gone from intl heavy left seat to working in a laundry, then to a dogs!t regional. After 9/11, I went back to college and got an extremely lucrative medical career. Now I can do both, and I am.
never launch on a questionable destination without a dam good alternate. That’s the best free advice you’ll prob get today. Since there isn’t, and probably never will be a national seniority list, your years of service ultimately don’t mean squat.
Use this downturn to fortify your resume. I just added another cert to my medical resume. You can qualify for this kind of thing easier than you may think. You could potentially get it for free. If you’re furloughed, get your logs into shape and polish off your interview skills. Get your references up to date. Take some classes at your local com college online or such. Take care of yourselves. Get into a better state of general health. Rest. Eat better.
Keep moving forward, we’re about to turn the corner, and the most prepared will go first. Not to the dogs!t places either, to the good spots. And there will be some. It’s prob gonna wind up being a feeding frenzy for pilots in the not too distant future.
Never judge a person by how he falls, but by how he gets back up.
God Bless!

the 747 and 777 is awful. You’re married to the jet. Think deadliest catch crab boat.
i just finished a pattern of about 2 weeks. I now have about 2 weeks at home (747).
if you would like your sanity and a little normalcy 767 for life!
if you live in cvg, and get the 767 (maybe 737 also), you can bid reserve for dhl (maybe amazon flying), and be home all the time. If you are mia based, and live in mia, and can hold the out and back lines you can be home a lot. On the 747, anc, lax and jfk you can be home more than the standard days off, if you can get the lines that allow that.
