FDX June Disputed Pairings
June 2007 is a 4-week month
Disputed Pairings:
The following is the FedEx MEC’s definitive list of the pairings that are disputed for June 2007. These pairings should not be available in any bid pack lines and should not be assigned to any Secondary lines without a specific request, by pairing number, from the crewmember to do so.
A-300: #595/YYC : YYC is disputed for unrealistic block time, almost 100% late MEM departure and onerous nature of the resulting short layover.
727: # 235, #232, #233, #236, #237 (D) Directed by the SCP to be fixed but instead really only changed, these pairings now follow the long dreaded MEM-BOS-IND critical period with the IND-BOS-EWR critical period. Arriving late at the IND hotel about 1000 for a poor sleep opportunity, the crew will then work until late the next morning in the high workload NE corridor during rush hour. The duty period in question simply isn’t scheduled as it operates—and as it operates, it’s much worse than it looks.
MD11 MEM: #136, #212, #310 and #383
Pairing 136 – Operates 24 June 07 - This pairing is disputed for the sequence after leaving SFS. The trip operates an 11:30 all night duty period from SFS-KIX then D/H to HKG. The short layover in HKG and resulting body clock swap from night to day on the HKG-ALA flight will be challenging. The pairing then has a short ALA layover and reverses direction again from ALA-NRT and another short layover. The PSIT would like to see a longer layover either in ALA or at one of the layovers on either side of ALA to counter the course reversal in ALA. Ideally, pairings that slingshot after flying this far around the world will continue in the new direction to base or have a longer rest period to allow proper sleep adjustment. Feedback is critical from the reserve pilots that operate this trip.
Pairing 212 – Operates 15 June 07 - This trip has very nice layovers on the front end in CDG and SFS but contains the same course reversal issue as pairing 136. The long duty period SFS-KUL D/H to HKG into a short layover and body clock swap on the next leg HKG-ALA will be challenging.
Pairing 310 – Operates 11 June 07 - This trip has a few issues, the primary being the “rolling body clock” (NIGHT-DAY-NIGHT-DAY) on the sequence starting with SFS-HKG-NRT. The very short layovers will not allow time in to adequately adjust to the circadian disruptions.
The second issue is the PVG-NRT then D/H on China Eastern back to PVG sequence. The Company has committed to booking a First Class ticket on this pairing, however I encourage all MEM MD11 Pilots to read the LAX MD11 SIG Notes for a very detailed description of the safety and comfort issues we expect on China Eastern Airlines.
This trip has a back end Deadhead from FRA-MEM; Feedback is critical from the reserve pilots that operate this trip.
Pairing 383 – Operates Saturdays; June 2, 9, 16 and 23. - This pairing is a MEM-MHT-MEM AM Out and Back. This pairing only operates on Saturdays. The Trip is scheduled to arrive in MEM at 0959 LBT. The CBA requires all out and back flying that launches in the critical duty period to block in by 1000 LBT. We have been tracking this flight and it has been experiencing a 50% failure rate in actually arriving prior to 1000 LBT. The Flight needs to be revised to depart MHT earlier as it is also very close to the 9 hour duty limit as well. The weekday trips are scheduled in the A300 and are also disputed. Feedback is critical from the reserve pilots that operate this trip.
MD11 ANC: 2050 disputed because of the MU China Eastern flight. Read LAX notes for further explanation.
Pairing 2050/14 Jun is disputed for the deadhead on China Eastern. The ALPA PSIT feels that China Eastern is a substandard airline and should not be scheduled for safety and sanitary reasons. For further amplification read the LAX notes.
MD11LAX: #59, #72, #2001, #2027, #2028, #2029, #2030 and #2031. Our eight disputes for June concern dead heading on China Eastern Airline. We have very negative feedback on this airline but it is limited because most everyone deviates to avoid flying China Eastern. Last month LAX had three deadheads scheduled on China Eastern and two of the three first officers deviated out of the bay area to Shanghai. With the increased frequency of deadheads on this airline in June, and mid trip dead heads on China Eastern, more crews will be unable to deviate. Please see an amplified explanation in the LAX portion of the SIG notes below.
One of our primary concerns this month centered on deadheading on China Eastern. The quality of this state owned airline is rated poor by a number of independent Internet websites. The web site www.airlinequality.com ranks the service on all the world airlines. The ranking system ranges from five to one star. Five is excellent and one is very poor. China Eastern is a two star airline, which is classified as poor. Further safety concerns can be easily found on the web by Googling China Eastern and Flight 5210 or China Eastern and pilot hunger strike.
Pilot OPS reports have delineated numerous problems resting on the long flight. Meals and seating on the flight are less than optimal. Getting rest on the flight may be a challenge.
For these reasons we made the decision to dispute flying on this carrier. The disputed pairings are longer international trips, and we do not make this argument lightly. If you disagree, and believe flying on the state owned China Eastern is acceptable please let us know.

Web Critique Sheets
Please use the form on our website, now available to all domiciles and dues-paying members; it gets to us without prior Company review. Your input is the most valuable tool we have to solving scheduling issues. Another option is to directly E-mail the SIG or PSIT. The appropriate E-mail addresses are located after the PSIT member’s names in the following sections of the PSIT notes. This provides quick access to any SIG/PSIT member. Thanks to those who have written and provided invaluable information on pairings and lines.

ALPA's founders chose "Schedule with Safety" as our motto. Support the SIG/PSIT in upholding that standard-- Don't fly disputed pairings!

None of the Airbus guys, Capt or FO, are what could be considered junior or newbees. Looks like they've made the conscious decision to ignore our SIG's recommendations. Our Union has got to give it's membership something to rally around right now or this could be the hole in the dyke that we lose control of. Even though I oppose our Age 65 and retroactivity stances, we gotta put some lipstick on this pig pretty quick and figure out how to stop the divide from getting bigger.

It's disheartening to see that almost every seat in every airplane in every domicile is already filled by volunteers. I really didn't realize that until I started checking my links to make sure they worked. (Once you've figured out the URL, it's easier than copying and pasting links.) I could have just stopped there and given up, but there's more to it than that.
Take a look at the links, and look at the names. If you know the people, take some time to contact them. Find out what they're thinking. Try to educate them if they need it. The only way we're going to make a difference is if we take personal responsibility. That starts at not flying the DPs, but it includes reaching out to people who do and letting them know how it hurts us all.
Be professional, but don't be afraid to speak up.
