Is that a freight company? The last DHL commercial I saw they were flying step vans?

Astar and Airborne are the airlines operating for DHL in the US. (Mostly.)

Dewey, Huey, & Louie
Drugs, Handguns, & Liquor Day & a Half Late Documents Hopelessly Lost They've got a million of 'em. DHL owns or contracts with at least 8 airlines around the world; SNAS in BAH, EAT in BRU, DHL Air in EMA, "El Gato" in Panama, DHL LTD in Hong Kong(?), and in the US, ABX (formerly Airborne Express) & Astar (formerly DHL Airways). Most all of the planes flying DHL freight are painted yellow so it's hard to tell them apart. ABX flies DC-9's, maybe a couple of old DC-8's and 767's. Astar flies 70 series DC-8's, A-300's and 727's. Soon to join the party; Polar's 747's and God only knows who else. This shell game and pilot group competition seems to make good business sense to the bean counters, but the reality is that there is massive duplication of expenses, little if any cooperation between the airlines, and no brand loyalty. DHL thrives on its philosophy of using only independent contractors. Unfortunately this resulted in the firing of 3000+ longtime and loyal DHL delivery couriers a couple of years ago, a mistake from which they are still recovering. Astar and ABX are in the final throws of contract negotiations with their respective pilot groups. When they both sign, there are rumors of some kind of big announcement. Most likely this big announcement will consist of management congratulating themselves, awarding themselves bonuses, and the firing of a couple thousand more employees. 8DRIVER |
I liked it when we were airborne express and I bet life was better for you 8driver at Dhl America???? Maybe I'm thinking of a different person. Everything hangs in the balance all the time.....nobody knows squat!!!! Our pilot group goes to Germany to make nice with the DHL people and we still get routes pulled and airplanes parked, and crews furloughed. We had a nice little cargo airline and now its gone.

ya know I should change my position from s/o to permantely furloughed....6 years and running....what a joke....I should have went with Midwest Express when they called way back when. At least I would be close to making captain

Thanks, for the Info

Ultra,
I was just saying the other day that you ABX guys are definately takin' it up the tailpipe. Astar guys whine about stagnation, but it's a hell of a lot better than getting kicked to the street. DHL has yet to make a sound business decision in the US market. The next couple of months should prove to be either pretty good for all of us - or prove that they are just as flat out, dumb-as-a-rock, pathetically stupid as they have appeared to be for the past five years here in America. 8DRIVER |
