Here's the short version: 7 days vacation. 2 days front, 2 days rear. If you commute...subtract 2. Bottom line, you get 9 days off--somewhere--in a 5 wk bid month. Long ways away from knocking out most of a month... July is a 5-week bidmonth. A Reserve Line holder will be responsible for sitting 19 days of Reserve. 7 days of vacation can be Extended to 10 days using the provision of Sec. 7. Para. G.3.e.i. Buffers before and after will add another 4 days of time free from duty. With 10 days of Reserve "knocked out" by Vacation, he will still be on the hook for 9 days of Reserve. He needs the last three weeks off. Using Sunday to Saturday as the "week" for my example, he can SLIDE and/or EXTEND his Vacation to begin on July 10 (Tues) and to end on Jul 20 (Fri). 48-hour buffers will guarantee he has OFF from 0130 July 8 (Sun) to 0129 Jul 22 (Sun). That leaves 21 days of the month that could have R-days, and the next step will depend on how the original Reserve Line was constructed. If there are more than 9 days left in those remaining days, those in excess of 9 will be dropped, and he gets to ask which ones. If there are R-days in week 5, he should ask to drop those first. If there are fewer than 9 R-days remaining, R-days will be added to reach that number, and he gets to ask which ones. He should ask for R-days in the first 2 weeks. If he can get all the R-days in the first 2 weeks, he's golden. If he still winds up with R-days in week 5, there's a pretty good chance he won't be used, since every day of Vacation will be credited towards R-day leveling (10 R-days in this case). He still has options to deal with those R-days. That makes it easy to knock out most of the month. :) . |

If you extend your vacation to drop the last day of a string of 4 or 5 R days, will they drop the whole block and then move the ones that didn't want to drop, or will they just drop that last day?
Under the old contract (last time I stood reserve) you could touch just the last day and it would drop off, leaving the others in place. Now I'm not sure with the new contract. I know if you bid recurrent during a block of R days they all go away and they will rebuild the line with those remaining R days. I want to keep 4 out of the 5 where they are, but knock out the last one. Possible? Thanks again. |

Actually, if you have VAC they will rebuild your R line, while trying to maintain days if possible, but you can input preferences. For instance, I've used VAC to leave 3 days at the beginning of a month and 2 days at the end and asked that they be consecutive at the beginning of the month. Result - a string of 5 R-days at the beginning of the month. They will try to schedule to max days if you bid VAC with a secondary line. You will get you number of VAC days plus what ever number of days worked to equal max days. Example, 7 days of VAC, they will try to schedule you for 8 days. They do not try to schedule to avg BLG, only min days off comes into play! At least that is how I got burned many years ago! |
Very possible.
Reserve Line reconstruction is described in 7.G.3.d. Subparagraph i. says that the reconstructed line will contain all of the original R-days that are not in conflict with the Vacation and buffers (unless the number of R-days plus vacation days exceeds the number of R-days for the month (19 in July)). IN other words, if the 14-day footprint of vacation, extension and buffers knocks out 14 R-days, you'll need to add back 4 R-days to achieve a total of 19 Vacation Days plus R-days. But if you knock out fewer than 10 R-days, then you'll need to remove all but 9 of the remaining R-days. Either way you'll end up with 7 days of straight vacation, 3 days of extended vacation (assuming you exercised that option), 4 days of buffer, and 9 R-days. If adjustments need to be made, you get to state your preference for how the adjustment is made (e.g., remove the R-day on the 23rd, or add R-day on the 9th). . |

I would advise against VTO & vacation...every time I have tried it I have been hosed.
Do they build the training first and then the trips? |

What about VTO + Training, assuming you can hold a top 3 VTO.
