Default Attacks by animal handlers

Is this really a big problem for you guys in cargo? Have there been many attacks by large animal handlers with tranquilizers? I don't remember hearing anything on the news, but you know, sometimes cargo incidents don't make the news.

But thankfully we have ALPA to go full force against Congress to get those secondary barriers in place on cargo planes to protect you guys from these nefarious animal handlers and their tranquilizers.

Not all cargo aircraft have supernumerary compartments, so requiring secure doors is sort of moot. As for the rest, they probably have requirements in their ops manuals for the animal handler to turn over the "humane killer device" to the captain for the duration of the flight unless it is needed.

I might be a bit nervous with Joe Exotic sitting behind me holding a lethal ranged weapon.

The article states that the handlers don't have to pass the same type of background check.
Seems like that would be a good start as well as the crew in control of all dangerous items.

Just ran into this the other day, taking horses to Hawaii. There are already policies and procedures in place, at least at my airline. I doubt we're the only one. Check your manuals.
