As an outsider looking in, this industry sounds incredible.

If I had to do it again, I would have majored in computer science and gone to work for a big tech company. More money, more time at home, and I could afford to buy a king air to fly during my time off.

If your passion is computer science that’s a no brainer, totally agree. All depends on the individual as cubicle living is a nightmare for many, but telecommuting is not. Does sound great as you might be able to dictate your work hours, just get the work done. I was a in cubicle hell once (not computer science/not my chili) and will never return Lord willing. Being home more is a big win, but a King Air falls short of Europe/Asia/Australia, etc. where I like to roam company provided during pre-CVD of course. (or All subjective as you can see.) Your path may vary.

With a good wife it’s a good life, much easier without young kids no doubt. While it has been great for me specifically, it’s not sunshine for everyone. Do your homework and may you work for the outfit which best fulfills your needs! Good luck to you and everyone.

Number 1 option for me is live in base. If I can’t do that this number 2 is try my hardest to get a plane where I am out once and back home. 14/14 would work great. Then I don’t have to worry about committing multiple times to work of the course of a month.

But agreed with above, you got to have a good wife at home. I got small kids as well and we agree it’s all worth. Just “be” home when you are actually home. Enjoy the fruits of your labor.

Any UPS/FedEx guys, can you add your stats too? I am very curious about how much do you end up making with all the deadheads and lower block times compared to the airlines.

I haven’t been at FDX for a full year, but maybe this will be helpful for potential new hires.

A300 FO MEM

If I only fly my awarded schedule until I hit year two pay I will be right at $90k for my
first 12 months. That includes roughly 3.5 months of training pay at $4k per month.

Average 16 days free from duty per month since released from IOE. Commuter, although when I commute to/from MEM I leave late the night before a trip and get back early morning after so I have the majority of those days at home. I can hold pretty much all DHs now so I don’t commute to MEM often. Haven’t been to my crashpad in over 8 weeks. I’ve spent every weekend in 2022 at home except for 1 or 2.

Total block will probably be around 350 at the most for the year.
