ACMI Career Advice

Quick question,

I have been employed at ATI as an FO since early 2019. I had a 3.5 year leave of absence due to a medical issue (motorcycle accident) and in the meantime i was instructing in the sim as well as interviewing for them. I will be back flying again by the new year. I am 28 years old with 2600 TT 0 turbine PIC and no degree. The main reason I applied was to fly heavy’s and do international flying. Turns out that’s not entirely what ATI does.

My plan is to get current again then apply to Kalitta especially with how things are going at ATI. I want to fly heavy’s and international plus I much prefer the home based 16/12 type schedule. My plan would be to fly at Kalitta till I age/medical out. My question is does this sound like the right move/decision or should I stay and upgrade at ATI. And do i have enough experience that Kalitta would offer me an interview. thanks in advance for any information of input you can give me.

How many hours did you have at the time you applied with ATI?

Palomarracer 09-27-2023 12:28 AM

Around 2100ish. Why?

JohnBurke 09-27-2023 12:39 AM

With that kind of flying, you might age out much sooner than 65 (or 67). You understand why?

Palomarracer 09-27-2023 12:47 AM

Yes, I very much understand why. But I have no interest in flying passengers or at a major not like any of them would give me a second look

Glad to read that you will get your medical back. Perhaps some could shed light on the issue that ATI stood by you during your convalescence for the past 3.5 years. And now, by appearance, you are dumping ATI. That may be a topic for discussion for future interviews. Hope all works out for you.

You don't owe **** to any company. They'd dump you instantly if they didn't need you anymore.

Get off that train

You’re too young to get on, and stay on, that ACMI train. Good God man, give me address for the intervention! No Charlie Nooo, we love you!

Carrier to carrier, seat to seat, plane to plane! Firstly, you kinda do owe ATI. Get current again, get more time, GET A DEGREE, then re-evaluate. Running off to the one eyed race car driver will only age you quicker and maybe get you a black eye. After a year you’ll be asking about Omni or National, rinse and repeat. RUN FOREST RUN! Flying all night, and in and out of that haunted house, CVG Hub, will age you! If you’re dead set on flying for and with Pirates, go to Atlas.

When you hit about 40 and you wake up in a Motel 6 in El Paso, you’ll see the Grim Reaper staring back at you, and your triglycerides are off the chart, you’ll be begging to be saved and wish you had not walked out on the intervention.

Good luck and stay off motorcycles. Goddam things are dangerous!

I recommend you apply, once you have a CJO then make your decision from that point. All else is speculative.

I left the other ATSG box hauler for K4 and it was probably the biggest upgrade of my career. Definitely give Atlas a try though.
