This is truly mysterious! Is this the same JL that couldn’t compose an email without tons of typos? The company lawyers must have been working overtime on the chop for this POS! And according to my last spaghetti chart, JL is no longer a chief pilot, but he is the equivalent of “Leave it to” Cheever when he was a company stooge. He (or his ghostwriter) has really outdone himself on this one!
This LOA is so bad in so many ways. The worst way, of course is this set the precedent for much of the future flying at FDX. That is one thing I agree on. The US economy is in the tank, and almost all future expansion is overseas. Think about this if you are voting “YES” because it won’t affect you…
What the NC and ALPA SHOULD have done:
1) Post industry comparisons (Cathay, etc.) to show the justification for the numbers. (Not just bankrupt third-tier carriers.)
2) Talk to current SIBA and Subic crews. We have the experience (such as numerous pilots living in Europe on their own nickel). Some of these crews begged the union to talk to them way back when the company wanted to open Zurich as a base (anyone remember that?). The union flatly responded with a “thanks but no thanks”.
Let them open it with the current CBA. Imagine them paying $20,000 cash per captain and some pretty hefty moving costs for everyone. How long will they do that before they come begging for relief?
Make no mistake, the company (including flight management and lawyers) is watching these boards like a hawk. (Even if BC, DW and company have sold you out in a Memphis parking lot.)
Let them know that they CAN do it “with or without”us. But it may get a little ugly without us. Do they really want to risk that?

Thanks Mario. You busted my gut. I needed a true statement to laugh at.
