NON LOA Vacation (Jamaica) Question
 

I've heard here and elsewhere of a FDX pilot who rents a condo in Jamaica. I'm thinking of bringing the family down there (2 five year olds) in October and wondering if anyone can offer some enlightening details as to the condo/Jamaica in general. I.e. is this a good family vacation for younger kids, etc? Also looking at the inclusive resorts as a possibility so any thoughts in that regard would be appreciated. We've never vacationed in the Caribbean at all so I'm basically picking sh!t out of the hat here.

I believe the site is www.jamaicavillavacation.com . I haven't stayed there, but heard it was a pretty good deal. I think he has a few places to stay at.

I have stayed in a few all inclusives in Jamaica. I heard the FDR Pebbles was a good place for kids. I think they provide a nanny for the kids. I heard it wasn't ultra deluxe, but the childcare makes up for it for alot of people. I have never stayed there so I can't tell you for sure.

Alot of these folks have interline rates, call them direct or use a interline travel agency like perx.

There used to be some literature about that in the "Corp Travel" office. You might be able to have one of them give you the phone#/internet info if you're not in MEM soon.

i saw a flyer for the jamaica condos on the bulletin board next to the old copy machine in aoc next to where all the forms used to be. check there.

It's in Ocho Rios, 2 bedroom condo and comes with a cook. Play all day and when you get back, dinner is ready. Had a great time. Appleton Rum is the best!!!!

Thanks for the replies. Those villas look like a great deal. The wife is getting freaked out by all the stories of rampant crime in Jamaica however, so that may unfortunately squash my budget caribbean vacation dream. My guess is it's not half as bad as her hysterical friends make it out to be, but whatcha gonna do. Any experiences/suggestions regarding the Caymans or Turks/Caicos?

BTW Albie, I've been pushing Hedonism for a while (sans kids) and somehow it just hasn't floated yet...

Almost all the violent crime is in Kingston on the south side of the island. Montego Bay and Ocho Rios are a tourist cash cow and therefore, get special attention from the cops. Never had a problem in the week and didn't hear of anybody else either, although I'd lock the car up. If you go, do the rafting on the Martha Brae, cold red stripe in your hand and some local poling you down the river like Huck Finn. Nice and relaxing.
