Has only checked the cost to store your furniture for a year?

Storage. A pilot shall be entitled to expenses associated with the storage of his household goods in the location of his permanent residence immediately preceding his assignment to CDG/HKG. Reimbursement shall not exceed $4,000 per year and the storage must be at a commercial storage provider.

LOA information
The storage fee is to provide the option for pilots to either lease or sell their current house. Since your furniture will probably be too large or too much for rental housing in either base, leaving it in storage seemed reasonable. The amount was determined through research.

Here are the numbers for storage at a commercial facility in my city: Storage cost is $3.15/100 pounds. (Other place was $3.90/pound)

15000 lbs at $3.15/100 pounds/month = 472/month 472 x 12 = $5,664/year
12000 lbs at $3.15/100 pounds/month = 378/month 378 x 12 = $4,536/year
10000 lbs at $3.15/100 pounds/month = 315/month 315 x 12 = $3,780/year

For you former military types, what was the weight on your last move—I bet it was more than 10,000 pounds.

That doesn’t include the cost of packing and moving furniture to the storage unit. The cost to do this was $38/100 pounds of furniture.

15,000 pounds $38/100 pounds = $5,700
12,000 pounds $38/100 pounds = $4,560
10,000 pounds $38/100 pounds = $3,800

So my question is what area of the country was the research based on, what weight was used for the calculations, and did it include the cost of packing and moving to/from storage?

Since this is my second post I guess I am now a member of the loud vocal minority who voted NO.

Was this storage in an air conditioned storage facility? I would hate to leave my stuff in extreme heat for 2-7 yrs.

I posted elsewhere my research on this, but here's a summary. I have no choice for city, I'm locked into the one I previously moved from if I were to bid an FDA now. In my city, the cost is $5.00/100lb/month. With the 4% sales tax, I came up with approximately 6400 pounds of stuff I can store.

This is a double concession. 1st, I am mandated to store all but 500 pounds of my stuff if I desire a housing allowance. I am then required to limit the amount I store to 6400 pounds. The current CBA doesnt place a limit other than "reasonable". Doesn't sound like a gain, to me Bob.

I am currently in the move process now in Colorado. I am personally storing stuff right now while I'm in a rental. My storge is a non air conditioned place. It's not furniture, but for a 15 x 20 area which is only boxes is $100 a month. I would need two more storage areas if I put my furniture and other belongings. So that would be $3600 a year. But that's not air conditioned.

You can store stuff for short periods (maybe 3 months) in a metal or concrete block mini-warehouse. You will still suffer from some climate damage. Do you know what happens every day to your belongings in such a facility? Your belongings in that type of storage facility will be subject to frequent wide temperature and humidity swings. Can you say warped, rusted, moldy, smelly, etc.? That is what you will have after 2 years.

A climate controlled warehouse is the only way to go if you value your belongings. Also, don't forget insurance for your belongings. If the warehouse is damaged in any way and your property is damaged you will get pennies on the dollar for your belongings unless you take out additional coverage. If you pack your own stuff make sure it is still covered.

By the way that 2 years is more than likely going to be longer. Add a move on the front and back ends to your requirement to be at the FDA for 2 years. Now consider that you need a vacancy bid open so you can bid back and then you wait for the bid to close, training letter with your training dates and finally training.
