Negative Vacation Bank Question

After using up my vacation in September, I came up with some negative hours in my vacation bank for year '07 (this past year). Does this mean the company will take it out of my paycheck next month or will they subtract it off of next years vacation bank? Not sure if I should do makeup or not.
Thanks.

They will subtract the negative amount from next year's bank. I've never done MUV in 12 years. I would consider it if I needed a full bank for next year for some long vacation plans, etc.

Make up vacation is probably only surpassed in craziness by make up sick. With the vacation system we have, you should be able to set yourself up just fine for next years' vacation. The only possible reason you'd not be able to do that was if you were very junior. Otherwise, enjoy the extra time off with your family.

Agree!

You can always go negative on your bank ......just remember you have less hours next year....

Be careful if you pick something up as makeup vacation (or sick for that matter)...since you don't have trip guarantee for it, once you are awarded it, it is yours. No dropping, swapping or trading....unless you call in sick, then your sick account won't be charged and the trip just goes away.

Here's a question about a negative vacation bank. If you have a negative balance and still have a vacation period left, what would happen to a trip that goes into that vacation footprint? Would that trip stay on your schedule or would you be removed as if you had a vacation, but just not be paid for it?
It happened to me once under the previous contract. I bid, on the advice of a planner, as if I didn't have vacation. The trip I was awarded was inside the footprint of my vacation period and when I checked my calendar after the bids closed, I had been removed from the trip. It was just pure luck that I was able to slide away from the conflict so I got the trip back, but I was never sure what would have happened if I had been unable to do that slide.

Each pilot shall have a vacation credit hour bank established at the beginning of the bid period commencing closest to January 1, each year, based upon the vacation hours he has accrued (as provided in Section 7.B.). A pilot's vacation credit hour bank shall be calculated by multiplying the number of vacation days by 6 CH. A pilot's bank shall be adjusted for positive balances (as provided in Section 7.I.3.d., 7.E.1.b.v., or 7.G.5.c.), or negative credit hour balances from the previous year's vacation bank.

A pilot must have a vacation credit hour bank balance greater than zero to take a vacation period.

If the SCH value of a pilot's last vacation period in a year exceeds the balance in his vacation credit hour bank, he may elect to reduce the number of vacation days in his vacation period in order to avoid or reduce a deficit in his vacation bank. A pilot shall communicate this election to CRS during the Conflict Input Window.
Vacation Deficit and Make-Up
If a pilot's vacation credit hour bank balance falls below the credit hour value of his remaining vacation in a calendar year, the following shall apply:
The pilot may bid for a make-up vacation trip(s) during the View/Add window for the bid period in which the pilot has a vacation period that, if taken as scheduled, would result in a vacation bank deficit. The credit hour of the make-up vacation trip(s) shall not exceed the projected deficit by more than 6 hours.
The pilot may submit for a make-up vacation trip(s) (as provided in Section 25.L.5.) at any time during the calendar year.
Make-up vacation credit hours earned in the last bid period of a calendar year (i.e., December), shall be credited to the pilot's vacation credit hour bank for the following calendar year.

Clearing the Bank
A pilot who has a positive balance in his vacation bank after his last vacation period of the year shall be paid for those credit hours, prior to the end of the year, at his pay rate at the beginning of the bid period in which the buy back is paid. The maximum balance subject to buy back is 40% of the vacation bank balance as of the beginning of the calendar year, including positive or negative adjustments from the previous year, plus positive adjustments in the current year, if any.

I read all that then and now but it doesn't seem to address the issue.
So my question is: If the bank is negative what happens to the footprint of that vacation period. When I was awarded a line that had a trip that fell into that footprint, even though I had a negative balance, the trip disappeared from my calendar. I was able to slide it away from the vacation period, so I got it back, but I wonder what would have happened if I couldn't have slid it and why did it go away in the first place?
