UPS hiring Q&A
#41
Dunno, but definitely seems they aren't looking for military guys. I don't know of too many on the active duty side of the house that are going to have more than 5000 hours and that's typically after a 20 year career. Seems if the computer is only looking for high time guys the AD side of the house might as well look elsewhere...

Then, if your FE written is more than 2 yrs old, and you put that date on the app, will you be ok (i.e. "active"), or will your app go to "on file" ??
Since the mins say that your FE written must be within 2 yrs, I would assume that the computer would kick you to "on file".
Anybody try this? i.e. apply with an old FE written, and not get put "on file" ??

Does that mean those in the pool too? Or is the pool still a hang out until we get back to you zone.

I'm curious what is considered competitive enough to grab the elusive "active" status. My times aren't the highest - 3500 total, 2000 pic - all heavy, 95% international - but should be exactly what UPS is looking for.
A bud in my squadron applied last January, he has close to 8000 total, and 6500 pic. Yet he has always been "on-file" and has never progressed beyond that status.
Anyone know the hours UPS is targeting when selecting candidates?

LOL! Just messin' with ya! Sounds like you and your buddy are both highly qualified for UPS. I don't think anyone has figured out the UPS HR mystery. Good luck to you.

"Active" from the start.
[QUOTE=Freight Dog;224181]
"Active" vs. "On file": "Active" means you have scored at or
above the current threshold for selecting applicants for interviews. "On
file" means you meet all the basic qualifications but scored below the
current threshold.
Freight Dog;
I read your post about the Active vs. On File issue. When I applied I wasn't initially given the flight hour supplement page. That said, mine was and has been "Active" since day one. In other words, all I had given them was my general information, education, military record, etc., and my file was "Active". So, to what threshold was I at or above upon initial application? I have since requested and filled out my flight hour supplement and it still says Active. Sounds like that's a good status to be in but for the most part the only threshold I'm at was spelling my name right.

I'd be a little careful with the active vs on file thing if you're hoping that's a good sign. From what it looks like, if you didn't complete your app for some reason ie you just didn't finish or maybe you didn't get the flight time supplement your file will still show active. I doens't mean the computer "likes" you it just means you can still access your file because it wasn't finished.
However if you're one of the scumbags in the boat with me who completed everything and are now "on file", I doesn't look good...
Well, since the airlines used to pretty much hire only military, now they want to hire only civilian since they finally see that we are superior to military pilots.
This is too funny, unfortunately it seems as it may now be true though as there isn't much hope for us mil types to compete with the civs on a straight hour vs hour basis.

I don't know about not hiring military pilots but they've hired around 15-20 folks from my reserve unit in the past 14 months. About 40% were also other airline guys, the rest just active duty then reserves. All were C-17 guys with decent hours (3000 - 6500). I guess it all has to do with the over water requirement

Do you guys at Brown think that showing up at a job fair would help at all? I'm another 'on file' guy. Was flying RJ's when I applied in Jan and have been on the MD-11 since Feb. Can't update the app to show my updated quals of course.
Thanks guys/gals,

Rook,
I don't know if there is a yes/no answer to this question. Some people swear by it that it helped them to get the job, others refuse to give Kit any money at all. I never went to one of these, but I was hired in 2005 when they were going off internal recs. to decide who gets interviews. The face-to-face thing didn't matter as much then. So, I think it will come down to personal preferrence as to whether you go or not.
Another thing to think about: if the whole process is controlled by the computer at first, going to one of these may be a moot point. It sucks that you can't update your quals, and hopefully UPS will figure out a way to do that someday, but you may be stuck for a bit. Just my 2 bits...
Good luck to you!
