Vacation Bank Question

I bid for all of my vacation days but I didn't extend it because I ended up having all the days off that I needed. (For the record, I was able to massage my schedule to receive 21 days off for the seven days of vacation.) Had I used the extend days they wouldn't have been used for anything productive and thus the reason I left them in my bank. Since I still have 10 or so hours in my vacation bank, is it safe to assume the company will simply pay that to me in December? Is there something I need to do on my end to authorize this at some point? I'm considering looking into the vacation open time and trying to find a couple of days where I could use these days. However, if payback is still an option, that would pay for Christmas and that might need some consideration this year. :)

I'm in my first year and I'm doing my best not to make any uninformed decisions (AKA "huge mistakes") based on my lack of experience in these matters. I appreciate any critique or comments you may have.

Now, back to the regularly scheduled rant.....

You will automatically be paid 31 Dec for the 10 hrs left over, as long as they are not more than 40% of your yearly vacation allowance.

As FUBD said, you'll be paid for your 10 hours during your last paycheck of this year. The 40% he mentions is the max that the company will allow you to "sell back" each year. I believe that the one exception is if they were offering vacation buy-back during the months that you had vacation and you were senior enough for them to actually buy your vacation back. When this happens, and usually you have to be mucho-senior, they take your vacation away and allow you to pick another month (where someone junior to you has vacation) and add 24 hours to your vacation bank. The positive side of this is suppose you had been forced, again due to seniority, to take a vacation in (as an example) February, a month that you would never in a million years have picked for vacation. Sometime in January, you get the FCIF that says they are buying back February vacations. It's your lucky day, especially if you're senior enough to actually get your Feb. vacation bought back. Then, you get the extra 24 hours, AND you get to pick a vacation month that is more to your liking. The only downside is that it doesn't matter how many days you sell them back (say you had 14 days of vacation in February), you still only get the extra 24 hours extra. Unless of course you manage to sell back a few different vacation periods. In which case, you belong in the nut house, along with the guys who actually fly Make Up Sick. (IMHO of course):D

I appreciate the input...thanks

I think I may just let FedEx pay my Christmas bill this year. :)

Not so fast, new hearted man! I'm pretty sure that you do NOT get to move your VAC to another month since you SOLD it. If you had 7 days of VAC you were selling, you would actually get 42CHs + 24CHs extra in the Mar15 paycheck and your VAC bank reduced 7 days (42CHs).

Oh, btw, I used to always take an 8 day VAC in Feb, and sometimes a 7 day in Jan. Made it easier to ski 75 days/yr! ;)

THREAD JACKING MY OWN THREAD

Ski? You're a two-planker? Have you ever tried to "RIDE"?

:) It's easier on the knees.

I'm going to hit some hills this winter myself.....where do you like to ski?

Yep, had a house in Steamboat for 7 yrs and lived there for 6 yrs, sold it this past Feb. Best tree skiing anywhere in Steamboat!

Disney rocks in February..... We go every year. Bring a jacket.

KnightFlyer 09-02-2007 10:41 AM

You only get to move it (plus 24CH) if it's involuntary.

Ha, we're sitting here right now planning our daughter's first Disney trip -she turns 4 on Dec 17 (Anniv of Wright Bros first flight :)). We're going the first week of Dec - nice wx, decorated for Christmas, no crowds (preholiday, pre bowl games). Of course, being very junior I won't have to worry about not getting the first week of Dec off.;)
