What we have here is a misunderstanding of "retirement". My sources tell me that the majority of the DC-8s aren't going to be "retired to the desert, rather, they are going to be "retired" from scheduled flying and be put out as system spares. When that happens you will have a reduction in the scheduled DC-8 flying and the reduction in the number of flying lines and the increase in the number of reserves, as I've heard that they are not going to displace off the DC-8 for the time being. So, If you are a mid-seniority to junior DC-8 crewmember and don't mind doing reserve, then you probably don't have to worry for awhile. However, if you don't want to be stuck on reserve, then you should be considering bidding over to another fleet when the next system bid comes out.

Like I said, I will believe it when I see it. When I was hired a few years back, management swore up and down the ocho was done in 2007. We shall soon see I guess.

I was starting to get confused regarding the "eight" versus the "ocho". Don't forget the "eight" is the DC8 and the "ocho" is the 747-8 that Boeing is planning to build. Do a search in this forum; this forum gets credit for the name.

All these rumors about the DC8 sure beat my last company rumors; "whose going to buy us now, where do I fall on the seniority list..etc"

It's actually faster to do it on that machine if that is all you have to do. Aslo, in our technologicly retarded company, that is the only system you can use to check your current pay.

We have to start retiring them as we are running out of buttons on the telephone to contact scheduling via the VRU. Given the hesitancy towards replacing the VRU, this was the next best option.

Checking current pay? Between the earnings statement and flight register on CMS and the pay stub on upsers.com what else is there to check? I'll have to politely ask someone how to check pay on that DOS screen the next time I see someone using it. It only takes me about 5 seconds to check in via the CMS window. How much faster do you need?

The DOS system will show you what your current credit time is. The flight registers/ earning statements come out after the fact.

You beat me to it. I check it on upsers.com or if I'm already logged in to CMS I'll click on the earnings statement...
