Exclamation UPS - Next System Bid?

Has anyone heard when the next system bid might be coming out? Also, the displacement bid (for the classic 74 crews) will happen before a system bid, correct? I guess it wouldn’t make much sense otherwise…

Also, do you think all the classic 747 guys/gals in SDF will bid over to the MD11 in SDF? I'm thinking that it would make most sense if they wanted to keep the same domicile and the same type of flying.

I’m just trying to figure out if 1 ˝ years on property will be enough to hold MD11 in SDF. Right now, I’d have about 45 guys/gals below me but that’s before the displacement.

What do y’all think?

I think you'll be surprised. The 747 lifestyle is very similar to that of the 727. By that I mean there are a lot of guys who like reserve and not working much. I'll bid over to whatever keeps me home the most and affords me the opportunity to pick up an occassional OT trip. That is certainly not the MD-11.

So since the 72s are gone and the classic 74s are next, what airplane do you think would be the closest to their current "working" conditions?

Stay off the DC8! The trips are grueling, the crews are a pain in the arse. In and out of the hub "sitting the sort"!! Hot standby, hot standby! No apu, hot in the summer, cold in the winter...The only thing in common with the classic? Four engines, that's it, if they are all working!

Oh don't worry, I want to go to the MD11 but am not sure if I can hold it once the 74 classic guys get displaced.

If your message was meant for them - I doubt any of them read this message board, as a matter of fact I doubt many 74 guys even have a computer. Most of them seem to live in the VRU era if you know what I mean... Just keedin' folks...

Have you ever seen that old fashioned looking DOS screen the old guys use on the computers in the crew room to check in? I am amazed that people who deal with sophisticated equipt in their professional lives choose not to use windows!

Lots of the senior 747 guys were on the DC-8 and only came over to the whale when the DC-8 stopped doing international flying. The DC-8 is the only fleet with "easy" flying. I'm sure that will be appealing to some 747 guys. However, one thing that might keep some from coming to the DC-8 is the retirement of the DC-8 fleet that has already started and will just accelerate as time goes on. The 747 guys might want to bid the DC-8, but not if they are going to have to go through training again in a few years to a another fleet when the DC-8 is retired. With the MD-11 scheduled to pick up quite a bit of domestic flying next year, that might entice them to bid over, as the trips will be easy DC-8 type trips. Now, if they want the same type of international flying, the MD-11 would be the closest match.

Was not aware that we have already started retiring the 8. The only one I have seen retired is 748. The 8 will be around for a while, I would say at least another 5-10 years.
