MD-11 Pilots + China RVSM
Howdy all-
FDX is implementing some procedures in November to comply with Chinese RVSM requirements.
Basically we will not be able to toggle over to meters anymore. We have to use a conversion chart and dial in feet into the FCP.
The catch: since you can't be precise enough with the altitude window (only 500' increments) we will have to fly the last little bit of the climb/descent in vertical speed mode. We will have to manually capture the target altitude.
Why, you ask? The Chinese say that all operations must be in feet. So there you go....
Anybody else going to be doing this?

Huck,
I know this is a MD11 question per se. However, at Brand X in the Classic 747 we did not have the fancy Feet to Meters button and would capture the metric altitude by leveling off at the feet equivalent. Every now and then we would tweak the aircraft's altitude to achieve the exact metric altitude, but not always.
Like I said, I'm not sure if this contributes to your thread.
See ya in China,
FF

Although the procedure for RVSM in China have not been published for UPS yet, I was told by the ACP rep to IATA that we could expect the same set up that you discribed. Cumbersome, but I guess we must aviate once in a while.....
I was told that the reasoning for the odd altitudes was that the Chinese military would not change to feet and the civilian operators would have to comply with these procedures for RVSM.

Sounds like UPS is like one giant purple ANC base. Good on ya.
