Oldest Flight Engineer?

Who has the oldest FE? At UPS, our oldest two were born in 1931 and 1932.

HughJarse 747 10-20-2007 02:39 PM

I think the oldest at UPS is 62 and 364 days old. Not sure I understand what you're saying. Enlighten us!

Isn't FE's retirement mandatory at 63?

Tigerpilot1995 10-20-2007 02:50 PM

Nope, we have some over 70.

We also have some over 70 and several over 65.

Jetjok 10-20-2007 03:31 PM

I think our oldest just retired a year or two ago. He was in his early 80's. Either he retired, or he just walked off on a preflight and was never heard from again.;)

Trijetter 10-20-2007 06:18 PM

Astar has 10 % of the senority list using walkers with rearview mirrors, horns and flashlights tied on. I believe a couple of the 70 plus guys use hoverounds to do preflights

Before United parked all the 747-200's they had an engineer that was 82.

Funny thread.....good one Jetjok !

I should go over to the Majors message board and start a thread entitled....how old is your oldest F/A. Some are in their 70's pushing 80.

Jetjok 10-23-2007 05:28 PM

TigerPilot1995: Are you N.K. from the 'ville?

7576FO 10-23-2007 06:03 PM

We had one guy FE that was 79 when we parked the DC-10's. He sat at home for 9 months waiting for a 727 FE class with pay. I flew on the 727 with him.
There was one other guy older than him or same age. Then they parked the 727's. Wonder what his severence package was?

FliFast 10-24-2007 09:02 AM

He got unlimited Depends and two-day old crew meals.

Typical Airline pilot retirement package.

JustUnderPar 10-24-2007 10:43 AM

The title of this thread will soon be Oldest Captain....especailly since the guys approaching 60 will cry age discrimination when they approach 65....

NW has an FE who is 72, and NW has an FA who was in the US ARMY in world war II . The FA has to be at least 82 by all but the most creative math. AND NW has lots of FA's who are too fat to fit through over wing exits.

I think I passed the 82+ year old in Chicago earlier this week. This lady could hardly walk on a flat solid surface.....She must really love the job I guess??

UAL has a FA named "Iris", whom I believe may still be flying. She's in her 80s, and one day on arrival overseas somewhere (or returning from overseas), the crew was held up offloading because she'd been in charge of the passports and couldn't remember where she'd put them!! Another time she went to work, putzed around in the ramp office, and then they couldn't find her for the flight. Turned out she'd brain-farted and gone home, thinking she'd just FINISHED a flight. Too funny!! But she keeps passing her recurrents, so ...

M.C., friend of B.H. Went to Atherton. Saw him recently and he said you were at Brown. The old gears meshed when I saw your screen name. Don't worry, I can't pimp you for a job (yet), just wanted to say congrats.

True story. Iris Peterson retired earlier this year. She started at UAL in 1946!!!! 60 years on the job! She was 85 years old and number 1 on the FA seniority list when she left. Unbelievable.:D

I think I saw the FA the other day when I was JS'ing on a DC-9 out of DTW.

Boris Badenov 10-30-2007 08:48 PM

Ask and you shall receive. Sorry to derail the thread, but I can't figure out how to PM here? And I guess I'm too lazy to figure out how...

MuseumDriver 11-08-2007 09:30 AM

I dont think they actually preflight anymore... what do they care, the life insurance would pay pretty good.

Unless he quit within the last year, ATA has one that's 79 or 80. I first flew with him when he was a youngster, just 75.

Is he the one who died in Narita during the preflight? I believe he had a heart attack and they found him on the ground under the main gear wheel well - he was holding his flashlight in his hand. This happened some 10 years ago? Not sure if the story is true but I heard it from a former United pilot.

⌐ AV8OR WANNABE 11-09-2007 09:22 PM

How about the oldest flight instructor? I’ve actually had the pleasure to fly with Mama Bird. Pretty neat lady!
