FedEx Taxi Incident
CHARLOTTE (AP) — No one was injured when a FedEx cargo plane went off a taxiway and became stuck in mud early Thursday at Charlotte-Douglas International Airport, authorities said.
Catherine Bergen of the Federal Aviation Administration in Atlanta said details were still sketchy but initial reports showed no injuries from the 7:30 a.m. mishap.
"I was notified a plane ran off the side of the runway and got stuck in the mud, but it was not serious," she said by telephone.
Only the crew was onboard at the time of the accident, officials said.
Even though there was freezing rain in the area, airport spokeswoman Haley Gentry said the accident "appears to have absolutely nothing to do with the weather."
The incident appeared to be distinct from one Dec. 8 in which a Southwest Airlines jet trying to land in a snowstorm at Chicago's Midway Airport skidded off a runway and struck a car driving on a nearby street.
Gentry said the FedEx pilot "turned short" while the plane was taxiing to a ramp area and the plane became mired in mud. Several different pieces of equipment were brought in to free the plane, she said.
No commercial flights were affected by the accident, she said.
Bummer!
