is bad news. they have the infamous Mike Hartley running things down there ( again). ask anyone from Kalitta and Polar how it was working for that sub-human scumbag.
the crews are told that if they organize they will shut down ( and they believe them) . is a plaze run by fear. If you are not willing to work on your days off,or stay on the road as long as they want you too... they don't want you there.
gone for 21 days??? that's a gooooooooooood month.

The schedule is 20 days on and 10 days off. The owner wants them to respect days off since it costs him 3hrs of extra pay for each day. Plus DH and or flight pay. They have been better about not working you on your days off. There is the possiblility of working 40 days with back to back schedules.
It doesn't happen often. Sixty hour guarentee per month. 401K-no matching.
Home based, but not deadhead pay the first year.
They are organizing an in house committee to improve working conditions in the company. They have talked to Hartley and no one has been fired yet.
Adding 2 airplanes in 2006. Upgrades and hiring in the works.
Lot worse jobs and lot better jobs out there.
Any specific questions, just ask.

Lot of worse jobs???? Where??????

If you want to be abused and used. Fly a 74 and make less money then an RJ pilot.

Good luck on breaking the 60 hour guarntee... VERY hard to do at Southern Air when you sit for a week at a time in a hotel.

Average 74 Captain at Southern makes less then $80,000 for being gone 20+ days a month.

Let's say you are a 3 yr captain... $100/hr X 60 hours = 6,000/month
That's $72,000/yr... gone 20+ days a month. Sometimes 40 days + at a pop.

"Getting more airplanes" isnt that famous aviation quote?
"Fast upgrade"... your going to need it if you want to pay your mortgage.

If you want to fly a 74 get a job somewhere else ANYWHERE else.

Adios!

Yeah, In particular I am interested in what the interview consists of, as no gouge exists that I have seen. It would just be good to have a heads up on what to expect.

Where is training held, how long...
Do they use PFE's, is the Right seat the starting position then...
What amount of flying do the pilots usually average, not just guarentee, but actual hours per month (pay)...

Thanks for the info and lack of unsolicited career advice, I appreciate it.

Default Southern Air

When I interviewed they bought me a ticket from my home to New York and had a van pick me up and take me to the company office in Norwalk, CT.
About a 1hr drive. They gave me the application and related material to fill out. I was interviewed by Mike Hartley and Dave Thiel (chief pilot) seperately. The usual questions, Why Southern Air, What do you expect,Background, What is RVSM,RNP, international experience, and the Big one...., Can you handle 20 days away from home? I was supposed to interview with Judy Ackley, HR, but ran out of time and didn't have to. No sim check. Some people were interviewed in Miami also.
I'm sure it has happened but I know of no one personnaly that has had to work 40 days straight. A couple of 30 and 35 days but I think they bid them to get the days off they wanted.
Training was at Aero Services in Miami. Company pays for hotel and $48 per day per diem. Six weeks to complete ground school and sims. 1 or 2 weeks for OE depending on skill level and schedule.
Of last 14 months I've broken guarentee 7 times (in 20 day schedule) for an average of 14.6 hours of extra pay for those months.
I have only worked 3 months on scheduled days off. And one of those was purely by my choice. I was e-mailed at home to see if I was interested. I did not have to respond. The other 2 times was only for one day each.
Any thing else?
I do not know what the current situation is with interviews.
Southern Air uses it's own instructors for systems and sims. CRM and emergency training are contract.

18wheeler, just wanted to say thanks for all of the info. It has been difficult to find current info on Southern Air. I am fortunate to be going to Miami in a week for the interview. Any more info you are willing to offer would be appreciated. Thanks!

Default Hotels

Southern uses the Homestead suites in Miami. Within easy walking distance to Aero Serv. Days Inn across the street. Both have airport pick up.
Reasonable rates.
