I was doing a nightly run of my Arrow over this neck of the woods since I can't travel anywhere due to DOD COVID policy, and while droning at 10k got to listening to the drama on tower freq. Approach started stacking the airliners on the holding pattern. A Skywest and Southwest flight got 30 min EFCs and all hell broke loose lol. Thought about moosing my way over the field to take a look overhead but decided against it, as those poor bastards don't need a VFR leaker cutting through the stack. Listening in to the ops folks on twr freq, looks like he took out a bunch of taxi lights at the intersection of 4/22-13/31, so they had both long runways closed for a while FOD-recovering and what not, hence the chaos. Good times. Glad to hear everybody is alright. Hope it was mechanical and not pilot error, this ain't the airline hiring economy to be pulling a non-mechanical off-road boo boo.

The nose wheel steering on some older Metroliners are known to at times , “have a mind of their own”. Many instances historically of Metros leaving the runway for un controllable steering.

I found them to be deferred about 1/4 of the time.

You must be confusing 25% with .25%. I flew the following tails x number of times. I flew with deferred nosewheel steering on 2 flights, and once had a complete hydraulic failure on landing. I'm sure some had a few more here or there, but not 25%.

I flew quite a few of those tails too, but had deferred nose wheel steering waaaayyyy more than twice. Whether it was 15% or 25% is irrelevant. It was a significant portion of the time. Enough that I became pretty proficient at deferred nose wheel steering, AWI takeoffs.

Ofcourse, you were sitting next to me so you know right?
