Sharnika Chandler was at the DFW job fair and gave a stand up saying UPS wasn't planning any 2008 hiring and if there was any hiring, it would out of the current pool, for what that's worth. Didn't go talk to them, well, because they're not hiring.

Default More of the same ...

As much as I hate to say it, UPS may be have reached the end of its 3rd hiring cycle. Historically speaking, UPS hires then completely stops for a few years ...

First time they hired HUNDREDS in a year, then paused. In recent times they will hire controllable numbers, and then pause again ...

Factors causing this pause ... age 65, and the retirement of 3 man a/c over the next 5 years. The 747 classic will be gone by this time next year. The DC-8 will EVENTUALLY be phased out through 2013 (subject to business needs, of course).

Won't be the first time I hung out at the bottom of a seniority list for years at the end of a hiring cycle, it just better be the last ! At least in that same historical timeline, UPS has never ACTUALLY furloughed either.

Furlough threats don't count either. Because the time that I actually did get furloughed, there was no prepatory threat from management, it just happened. Lots of other places along the path have used the threat ... FWIW.

All is just my opinion ... YMMV.

Later, Brown CC

This is from one of the managers who represented UPS at the job fair in DFW this past weekend. I have known Leon since 1970, and we were at TWA together during the 80's. He informed me that UPS had committed to the job fair prior to the age 65 rule passing and the company did not want to back out of that commitment. Hiring this year will be dependent upon the number of ANC vacancies being filled by awarded bids and displacements and by the number of over 60 crew members bidding those open vacancies. Until this is resolved there will be no new hires in 2008.

So are displacements a certain thing or will they try to stick to vacancy bids only?

TW - if you're spending the big bucks it never hurts to come by to say hi to all the airlines - they might remember you when hiring resumes. Just my take on it… Good luck to you with your job search.
