Out of curiosity, given the same fuel quantity and similar condition, what is the difference in Range between the different engine option?
Is it anything like the difference between Jet/Fan on corporate planes (Lear20Vs30) ?
Thanks

The CFMs burn 1000-2000 lbs less total per hour than the JT3s. Can't really make a fair range comparison because the -62s that are JT3 powered are much lighter due to their short fuselages and they also have longer and more efficient wings than the -71s. Can't wait to see how the -72 performs; short body + big engines + big wings = rocketship.

I did not realise I had to have 25 posts to Pm a member, I`ll just ask the questions...
Do you feel ATI is a stepping stone for the pilots that worked there, or is the enviroment such that you can consider it long term(5+years)?
The 8`s are no spring chicken anymore, do you feel they will be around for 8/10 years (Noise/pollution/spares) or is the company considering other airframes?
Can you fly contract while employed by ATI or can you exceed the guarantee?
I am a low time pilot(3500), what is the upgrade time right now?
Do you know how many pilot they are looking for and when are the classes schedule for? Do they Type SiC (International Operation)?
ATI seems by all accounts a decent company, i just would hate to give up a PiC job without learning as much as possible of what I might be getting myself into....
Thanks for your time

In my opinion ATI is the type of place you can stay long term and do well and still have plenty of time at home with the family. In the last year only one pilot has left to work at another airline. While it's true that the DC-8's are getting long in the tooth the company is looking at newer airframes (767's if the rumors are true). I believe ATI's pending purchase by Cargo Holdings International will expedite the process since another of CHIs subsidiarys is in the process of converting ex-American 767s into freighters. I also think they're planning on operating the -8s for another seven years or so.
Contract flying would require the Chief Pilot's blessing and overtime is somewhat limited but not impossible to obtain.
As for upgrades; the folks currently upgrading have been here for 5 years. I don't anticipate it'll take that long for me due to upcoming retirements and the possible fleet expansion. With the amount of PIC time you have and depending on what category airplane it's in you'll probably need 1000 hours SIC before you can upgrade, but the company can waive that if they want to. My guess is that you could upgrade in as little as 2 years or as long as 5 years.
They posted eight FO positions for internal hiring (FE upgrades). No one has been awarded a position as of today. If not I assume they'll hire eight off the street with a class date in late February or in March. Just speculation on my part.
Type ratings; They have recently given full type ratings to new hires, but I don't know if they're still doing that. You would at least receive the SIC only type rating to meet the international requirement.
And lastly: my advice- take it for what it's worth. If you don't have 1000 turbine PIC I would stay and get it so you'll have more options. If you have that and want to fly to some truly unique places with some great people then it's worth trying for.
Good luck

You preatty much hit the neil in the head.
I have about 500 PIc on Lj35, but i fly about 95 hours a month, so i could be getting to the 1000 mark in the next 5/6 months, if i was to leave early, i would like to fly P/T until i got the 1000hrs, just as insurance....
I fly to Central&S. America and I really enjoy it, but the been on call is taking its tall, and you seem to combine a cool schedule with interesting flying, and that is why I have applyed!
Anyway, I guess I`ll start worrying about it if I get called for an Interview!
Thanks for all your help
