They might be wrong but that's definitely what the management guy said at recurrent last week. That any guys over 60 would have to check out on the panel before being allowed to go on to another seat. Question was brought up what if they intentionally try to fail the S/O course to speed things up and his answer was they they would be done. For what it's worth.

So, if I'm the one baby sitting the "Captain," who may or may not be qualified as per the FAA to manipulate the controls, then am I not the de facto "Pilot in Command?" And should I not then be receiving Captain's pay?

And another thing: If over 65 guys cannot act fully as PIC because they need to be baby sat, then why should they be allowed to bid Captain seats? Shouldn't they be relegated to FO seats? But wait a minute, to fly the MD-11 at FedEx, you must have a type rating and be able to act as PIC. Ergo, if over 65 guys cannot truly act as PIC, then they shouldn't be able to bid the MD-11!

Perhaps someone in a leadership position at our union should suggest to the company that they cancel this bid BEFORE it closes this time - in order to give everyone more time to work out these important interpretation/application issues.
So they won't have to have yet another re-do when they find out after the fact that the awards may not have been legal and/or in compliance with the FAA's guidance.
Why the big rush to get these guys back up front in the first place?
Anyone in the union leadership reading any of this?

I believe this is the classic tit fot tat: Union says we'll push for the POS LOA in return for the Company letting us bid back as soon as the AGE 65 rule is passed. Company doesn't need to hire and saves on training cycles, plus huge savings on labor costs overseas. Near-Deads get to make more dough at rest of membership's expense knowing that the LOA won't affect them.
