FDX: jumpseating procedures

Gentlemen,
In the next few weeks I have a few arrivals in EWR putting me at the last 121 flight to get me back to BOS and it is not looking too good. I was looking at the Fedex site and saw that there are two late night/early morning flights that get to BOS direct from EWR but I had a few questions.

I would be in the terminal in EWR (C, but that doesnt really matter) now how do I actually get to where I need to be to board the plane? The way I figure is that I get a cab and just ask to go to the fedex ramp but I am not sure if that is where I want to be. Is there a fedex operations room that I would go directly to and then they would direct me to the particular aircraft?

When I arrive in Boston I assume it would not be as difficult, the crew would just point in the direction of leaving the airport and I would call a cab to the main terminal to get transport home (i take the Cj trailways bus.)

That is pretty much my main concern in riding with you guys, I have read the policies and procedures and understand those it is just a matter of where do I go and the best way to get there.

This may be somewhat sensitive information so if you want you can feel free to PM me. Hopefully one of the many purple guys on this forum is familiar with ewr ops.

Thank you

There are plenty of Express Jet and Continental folks that ride us out of EWR, they may have better gouge on how to get to our ramp than any of our guys.

Once you get over to our facility it's easy--our security people will lead you up to the J/S area where you check in at the desk.

Good luck!

It is very easy at EWR -- no cab involved!! Go to the Bus Stop and the very last lane is the FedEx Stop. Wait tims is approx. :20 minutes (max). Depending on the time of the day you will see other FedEx employees. When the FDX bus arrives (and it does look like a school bus), board and kindly inform the driver that you are also going to EWR Ramp.

Arriving at the Ramp you will be sent through security, required to present ID/sign in, escorted through the maze we call EWR, and delivered to the jumpseat area. Free Coffee.

The flights you are talking about are on the 727 (I believe), so it may be a little noisy.

Good Luck.

I looked up the AM flights from Newark to Boston on February 20th so you can have a data point. There are two flights. The Airbus shows at 3:56 AM. The 727 shows at 2:35 AM.

Thanks for that good info and FREE is perfectly within my budget. The bus that picks up, is that just outside the baggage claim in any of the terminals or are we talking the standard issue P4 bus stop?

I saw those two flights listed and they may work out well, they are a little on the late side but it sure beats spending an entire extra night in ewr and I would be glad to get a ride along if they had room. Do both the bus and the 72 have seats in the back as well or are they specifically just the cockpit seats?

side note: I have been trying the 1866 number and keep getting the person at extension etc etc etc but I will keep giving it a try the number I have is 866-357-5711

The bus has a plethora of seats in the back. On the 7-deuce you will be giving the engineer a lap dance, or vice versa, depending on phase-of-flight. :D

I'll PM you a good phone number.

kronan 02-19-2008 06:35 AM

That's the phone number that the J/S finder lists, so, should work.

Off Line Jumpseaters

If you're an off line jumpseater wanting to J/S with FedEx, you need to call our 1-800 number a couple of days ahead to create a profile. Not sure what's involved but they will ask questions and may even call your company for verification of employment.

USMC, the bus in EWR is past terminal A, and I think it is the A bus, w/a fedex sign near the door(there are 2 buses that go to fedex, A and C, one goes to parking, and one goes to the terminal bus stop). When in doubt, just ask the driver. Boston, leave the ramp, take a right, walk down the access road, there are bus stops along the way, but that early in the morning, the bus may not go all the way down to the fedex ramp. Keep walking towards the hyatt, about 1/3 a mile, from there, you can either take the water taxi to south station, or take bus 66(I think) which goes to all of the terminals, where you can hook up with other public transport. Done to plenty of times, but just can't remember exact bus numbers or letters. Good luck.

usmc-sgt 02-19-2008 08:27 AM

Great info again guys..I will give that 800 number a quick shout to meet and greet and see how that works out. and VS I will do that when I get to BOS from what I gather once i get off the plane and and hit the access road I just start walking towards the hyatt until I find a bus to take me to terminal A,B or C where I can catch the CJ bus to NBPT.

Thanks again

Take the AirTrain to the A terminal. Go out to the bus stops and go to the far end. There will be a FedEx bus with an 'A' on the side. This will take you to the FedEx ops building (Bldg 347). Security will take care of you from there.

I called the 1800 number that odark listed and that helped, I have registered and gotten that all taken care of and was told all I need to do now is call the 866 number 24 hours to 2 hours prior to the flight to list and providing there is room and I get the thumbs up from the skipper than I am in. I have been reading a few places with a google search the the 72 does not allow jumpseaters because fedex only wanted offliners in the back which it does not have but it appears that it may be old news as MD11 mentioned.

Thanks for the directions, it sounds like a fairly commuter friendly environment out of those two airports with public transport available, would work out great for those nights I duty off at 2200 and would rather get home by 4am then sleep in a crashpad and get home by 11 the next morning.

usmc-sgt, on your way to BOS, you might just let the crew know that you're looking at a 1/3 to 1/2 mile walk to get to a ride. I'll bet they offer to drop you off on their way to the hotel. And don't worry about getting to or from the ops office once you get to the Fedex ramp: you will be escorted to/from the office. Good luck.

I never thought of that but I am really not one to impose like that, a 1/2 mile walk will be good for me especially if its up hill both ways in the snow.

hyperone 02-19-2008 12:02 PM

Actually, if I was on the flight I'd happy to give you a ride, and insulted if I saw you walking down the road while we were driving to hotel. Fedex guys, as a rule, use the passenger guy's jumpseats a lot more than you passenger guys use ours, so we are usually more than happy to go a little out of our way to help one of you out.

usmc-sgt 02-19-2008 12:07 PM

I appreciate that, my old flight school chief pilot retired from FDX this past September and he was a real standup guy and told many stories of how he worked in similiar company.

I may take someone up on that offer if it comes along because in all honesty no one likes to pull their rollaboard and flight case a 1/2 mile in the rain/sleet/snow/cold/heat etc.

Bohica 02-19-2008 12:45 PM

If you are in cass you can ride in the cockpit jumpseat of the Boeing.

We take offline guys in the 727 cockpit as long as you are in CASS. No problem.

usmc-sgt 02-21-2008 03:13 AM

Thats good to hear. I almost had to catch a ride last night from EWR but shocklingly the 8:45 CAL to Boston had somewhere around 40 empty seats which is unheard of. That was my last flight so it was looking like I would be making the voyage to visit Fedex. Its looking like next week for sure because I duty off at quarter till ten and thats IF I am on time which will not happen at EWR.

Ive got all of the info I need though so it seems like it should be a piece of cake. Thanks everyone, I now am in their system with a profile and know which planes to take and exactly how to get where I am going.

Just a little noisy? ROFLMAO!!!!

Pack some good ear plugs! You'll enjoy flying on the classic "Whisper Jet".

Bohica 02-23-2008 11:07 AM

Hey, I heard that if you were in cass you could ride in the cockpit of the 727.

:)

Right now, it's down for me as well, but if there's one thing I've learned about the alpa FDX JS site...it could be down for one minute, and then up the next.

Or there is a conspiracy about accessing ALPA through BOS wifi. :D

Good luck!
