Fed Ex Mentor

I am looking for a mentor that can help guide my way to Fed Ex the company I would like to work for in the future. I have recently completed my bachelors degree in Management and have recently taken a F.O. position with Mesa Airlines in the DHC-8. I have heard bad things about Mesa from different forums, but from the people I have actually talked too, they don't mind it. The upgrade is ATP mins and people are upgrading in under a year.
I figured Mesa would be the fastest way to that 1000pic turbine, plus I will either be based in PHX, DEN, or GJT. I'll be flying in and out of the Rockies! I do want to move to Denver, and the other 2 bases are close so it kind of makes sense. Also, any tips for training? I start on the 10th. I am pretty nervous but also excited. I believe Mesa is a part of ALPA which I don't really understand any tips? Anyone feel free to email me, Jeff M if you see this, email me I tried emailing you but your email must be different.

I will mentor you my son. Seriously,, forget the mentor crap kid. Dont hold the Fedex guys in to high esteem. They are just pilots just like yourself who were fortunate enough(and lucky enough) to get on with a good company. Everybody and their grandmother want to fly for UPS and Fedex. Those are the places to be(for now).

Congrats on your new job. Get into training and do the best you can. Build as much time as you can. And then,,, get the best job that you can.

One really good piece of advice is to keep in touch with alot of your captains your going to be flying with at Mesa. They are likely to be the guys leaving for better jobs first and can give you a rec. and attest to your flying skills ect,,,.

Good luck to you.

Whaledriver is right. It's all about networking with those you are flying with now. If you're seen as someone who is fun to fly with, you'll get recommendations later on down the road. I'm not saying you should go out of your way to be a "social coordinator" but don't slam click either.

A lot of the senior guys at Fedex are there now because they couldn't get hired at the legacy carriers. I was furloughed from Delta and didn't go back. Now I are a genius? I don't think so... It's all about timing, and networking.

And of course, getting in your minimum hours. But those are just for starters. You'll be competing with guys who may have lots more time than you. But we have been known to hire some 20 somethings from the regionals, so once you've met the qualifications, get the apps in!

Good luck

Colinflyin,

This can be a rough crowd on this forum. Recommend you do some searches on this board/forum about hiring, foreign domicles, interviews etc. The data is here you'll just need to dig it out.

Colin,

If FedEx is your ultimate career goal for flying, as it has been for me for quite some time, I would recommend the following:

Once you get through training, once you're awarded a base, and once you're off reserve... think of applying to FedEx to throw (or handle nicely) boxes at a sort facility near your home. Once you have been a FedEx employee for 12 months (I believe, if not I'm sure someone will correct it), you will be able to complete an internal-type of application for a pilot position. Of course, to interview you will need to meet the hiring minimums (which you'll find on this website), and you will need to meet them at a time when interviews are taking place, or wait for interviews to resume...

I did not go through that process, but my FedEx 'mentor' did, many years ago. I believe the same rules still apply.

So, you work part-time for FedEx while you fly for Mesa, make sure to do a good job at both, and when your 1000 PIC comes around, as long as they're interviewing and you meet all the other minimums, you'll be ready to interview.

Try to enjoy your flying now, which can be done at Mesa, truly. Basically, enjoy the process of getting to FedEx. Good luck.

I'll be your mentor for FEDEX. Quit mese and people will think a lot more of you. Just my two cents.

You have a certificate, a pulse and are willing to work for very little $?

Keep your eye on the FedEx online application. The next time the window opens for new applicants, pony up the 50 bones and start your profile. Never mind that you don't meet the mins, just update the thing every month. When you finally do meet the mins and get a recommendation, your long-term interest in the company won't go unnoticed.

Also, our "Chief Pilot" recently told us that any hiring done this year will be from folks already in our applicant pool. It would be unfortunate for the same thing to happen down the road when you finally decide you might look hire-able to the company, but the application window is closed when you attempt to fill one out...best to get your foot in that door very early

( I would do the same thing for every other company out there that you are remotely interested in and ALL companies who don't charge for online apps)

Best of luck.
