Fedex Pilots: What is the % of day flying would you say you guys do?
Also,
Can someone give me an idea of what commuting would be like working at Fedex, say 4 years seniority widebody fo NOT holding your outstation for layovers.
What is the schedule like, I'm guessing you do one week on one week off. How many days off after 4 years and staying wiidebody fo?
Last question, is there such a thing at Fedex as commuting and flying during the day?

Because of the efficients the company has been able to gain due to the postal contract and our other growth, there is less double deadheads and more trips requiring starts in MEM. This combined with the hours they're building lines to, many if not most lines include a third trip beyond the (two)week trips on a normal 28 day 4 week month. The 5 weekers will surly have 3 or more trips, even on the best (domestic) lines.

Lil boy Blue
That is a very difficult question to Answer in terms of...........if you get hired today........what will it be like in 4 years??????...................
Previous Post was correct citing the Crystal Ball.........
Chances are good that FDX will continue to grow....................That being said........Anything can happen in four years. FDX could double in Size or be in Bankruptcy with 1/3 of our guys on the street or worse...................Don't laugh or Scoff Gents (anything could happen) and all it takes is a New york Second.
Lets be positive and assume continued growth....................................
Let us look at a Pilot with 4 years....... You could Hold any FO seat you want at any Base. You would be the most Senior on the 727. If you wanted to be in Subic Bay Phillipines on the A300 or in you would have the most seniority for a Widebody FO position.
What type of Schedule do you want? There are many factors
Are you looking for a Commuter Schedule (One long trip or 2 trips per month)
Are you looking for 3 to 4 trips per month or 5 to 6?
Do you want to Fly Domestic or International?
Do you want money over better scheduled and general quality of Life?
Do you care if you are on reserve or not?
Lets leave Subic out of the picture because it it very small and Commuting there and back is............well lets say difficult (Although we have folks do it)
You could probably hold a schedule 2 intl trips a month in ANC........One long 1 and 1 short one.
You could definitely hold a week on week off type schedule on the 727 but it would be Night Hub-turns. These are OK if you are young and in good health They ain't for me
You could hold a similar schedule on the DC10 but it would not be as good.
The Airbus you would probably hold Reserve or a Secondary lines,(a secondary line is line built with left over open time and trips dropped by line holding pilots for vacations and training). Sometime they are good....other times not so good.
The MD-11 MEM you would hold a very JR line or Reserve or Secondary line.
Reserve on the MD-11 can be a challenge. You can get called out for a 1 day trip or a 14 day trip.or anything in between. But generally MD11 reserve lines are 13 days on and then you are done........sometimes they add a few carry over R days to cover trips at the end of the month.

Thanks guys,
I should have worded my question better. I don't expect you all to have a crystal ball. Its like the stock market, to best predict the next 4 yrs your best bet is to look at the previous 4 which is what you all did. thanks.
I guess I've tried to figure out your schedules and thought 70% or so would be showing up at 2am on Monday morning and getting done Fri morning, go home to come back and get the plane back in position to Mem Sunday night for Monday morning where the new shift takes over while you commute home.
I can't imagine how it would be productive to have 3 or 4 days splitting up this week.
My main point is trying to find out what commuting is like, prefering quality of life over $. A 4 year 727 fo makes I think around 110 a year. Thats plenty for me if I could hold a schedule I wanted.
One last favor, looking at your bids (I'm assuming you have bid packs and not PBS) tell me if you wanted MAX days off next month how many could your seniority holds and how many years you have worked there.
thanks guys.

Again your question is difficult to answer.................
Month to month..........figure on working between 13-16 days a month. If you live in the cities that you Deadhead to /from.............you Still are working............you just happen to be doing it at home, so in essence you can shave 1 to 2 more days off.
We currently have long weekend layovers (48-52 hours) in a few select cities. If you happen to live in one of these cities and have the senority to hold it........guess what.......you are working but are doing it at your Home................
If you want a lot of days off.........and don't care about loss of pay, you can conflict a carry over trip with a trip in the new month and knock a week or more of work out................but you lose the pay. Your choice.......money or more time off.

Sir,
don't want to push my luck here but,
SO 727 Mem
FO A300 Mem
if your bid pack doesn't include the pairings can you send that as well, my home is IAH thats why I choose the A300 (I think you have 2 overnight acraft per night here) and of course the panel 72 as thats what I would be living on for a year or so.

Percentage of daytime flying w/FDX
Myboyblue: i wish you all the best and hope you get your heart's desire.
To all of the guys who have responded to myboyblue, it ENCOURAGES me in my pursuit of a line position in the future with FedEx. You guys shot straight from the hip and always seem to be positive and upbeat about FedEX.
Although I'm just starting out, (looking to attend a flight academy...I'm 44 yrs old), my hope is to bang out my ratings & licenses, get hired @ a regional, build time and around 49-50 years old apply to FedEX and other stable companies. My desire is to fly FO on the A-300 on a domestic route. Is it impossible? I don't think so. The underlying comment I keep hearing in many of the posts is, "Timing is everything."
