Same type rating, same plane, no special requirements except for differences training. At least, that's what they tell us. It doesn't FLY the same for sure. And of course I can't fly the DC-10, and I am NOT typed in that plane.

[QUOTE=TonyC]Except for the differences that are summarized in the 3-inch thick Volume 3, the MD-10 is identical to the MD-11. [/sarcasm]
Same airplane? Starts different, Flys different.......Lands different......climbs different............
let's see 103 differences in the manual as I recall.........but it is exactly the same right??..................NOT

For a while we had different versions of the same equipment and the differences were way to many to remember. I guess as long as they don't make them part of the oral it is okay. I would imagine you guys have a bunch of different cockpit layouts too since you have picked up a plane here and there along the way.

FedEx actually did a pretty good job in standardizing the MD-11 cockpits...the only real differences I've seen is the placement of the weather radar/ACARS printer...but nothing earth shattering.
The MD-10s are all the same...they pretty much re-did the entire DC-10 cockpit, so they could make them exactly the same.
As far as flying differences? Well, there are those that say our MD-10 accident in Memphis may have been exacerbated by the crew not flying the MD-10 a whole lot.
Personally, in the past 2.5 years, I've flown the MD-10 MAYBE 10 legs?? Out of 200+ legs total?? And most of those were during IOE...
Landing is critical...different techniques (not officially taught, of course...because it's a common type-rating and lands just like an MD-11 right? ) . If you land it like an MD-11, you'll smack it on...kinda sounds like the MEM accident, eh?

On the top of the fuselage, the ventral antenna is located above the wing root on the MD-11 and the MD-10. The same antenna is located above the cargo door on the DC-10.
The Outflow valve on the DC-10 consists of three doors or panels. (Left side of fuselage, below main cargo door.) On the MD-10, the Outflow Valve is replaced by the MD-11 type, single door.
On the right side... On the DC-10, the back of the Flight Engineer's panel can be seen through the right, aftmost window. On the MD-10, there is no FE panel.
And, as has been mentioned, "MD-10" is painted on the nose of the MD-10s on both sides.
