UPS system bid

ERJ, you've hit the nail on the head. We've all been wondering the same thing as us junior guys keep getting bumped around the system for no apparent reason. The only thing I can think of is they see sending someone through the training center as no cost to them. Why look ahead a few months and "carry" a few crewmembers in excess when we can send them to training knowing they'll just rebid their old seat asap.

Isn't it amazing that this company sells their services to synchronize other company's logistic flows? You are correct in your thinking. When you get on the property you will become used to seeing such things.

This may be off topic, but, how far out does UPS tend to staff/bid aircraft that are "planed" to be delivered (ie: 767s)? As a poolie, and an outsider, it seems like a waste of money and resources to displace a whole bunch of people in June (with training in the 3rd and 4th quarters), only to retrain them again in the 1st quarter next year when the 767s start showing up. Any thoughts Roberto?

Easily. HR wont be operational until 2010. And that date might be wishful thinking. With the 76 replacing the DC8, which is what's going to happen, it might be 2012 before UPS hires off the street. Age 65 and three man to two man crews has killed hiring for a long, long time.

Do you have anything official on the 76's replacing the 8? Everything I have seen is non committal to their purpose. At this point it appears logical, but more of result of the market than anything else.

IMO, personally put it at 12-15 months. But we are all just mulling and blending the unknowns and knowns.
Knowns: tough market, age 65, 747 classic going away, company wants to reduce crews on each fleet.
Unknowns: age 65 real retirement time line, some may leave and retire afterall, some may retire at 64, etc. DC-8 phaseout plan, effect of crew reduction on fleet (or even if they will do it)
My blender results from today: Believe they will have small classes of new hires from the pool in 12-15 months. Caveat: Market conditions can change the outlook.
UPS is reactive, not proactive regarding pilot hiring. That is by design to save money. Good for those on property, (furlough protection) but hard for those in pool, etc.

Salty Dog,
Thanks for your thoughts on this subject. While I tread in the pool, I certainly would love to get that call but I guess I would rather be patient (OK, maybe I will have to be REALLY patient), than get hired and furloughed. I have been down the furlough road before and would rather not walk it again.
In this business, I realize that sometimes it is anyone's guess how things will unfold, but I appreciate your insights, it helps me get a better understanding of all of the factors involved.
