FDX - Practice Bid Delayed Til Next Week
#21
Most regional airlines have a few hundred to a few thousand employees, and their business model is rather limited. FedEx on the other hand has over 200,000 employees, stationed all over the world. As well, our business model encompasses a world-wide perspective, and unless you've been living in a cave and haven't noticed, things change on an almost hourly basis. Perhaps that's why it seems so nutso around here. Also, perhaps you should thank your lucky stars that you were fortunate enough to have been offered a job in this circus.

BoyCaptain,
What you are proposing is a reversal of the original intent of this bid (excess bid). Which, as I understand it, was to put a few extra in the widebody seats over a relatively long period to prevent training cycles down then up again in less than two years. Extra costs for too many in higher paying seats but a plan that would minimize training for the next 2 years.
Not saying you are wrong but my inclination is to say so. It would be odd for this to turn around so fast.
But if the 2 year estimate suddenly became 2.5 or 3 before another MOAB.....
More likely IMHO...your sources are messing with you (us)

Dude, relax. I was just saying that we seem to be reactionary instead of proactive. We cant seem to bring a new airplane online, predict staffing, offer a decent LOA, get EFB or any other technology installed, etc. Our company looks like we have too many departments to accomplish anything. I did'nt mean to hurt you feelings just stating the obvious.

That's not what you were saying, or at least it's not the way I read it. This is what you were saying:
You didn't hurt my feelings, but you must admit, we've got a lot going on simultaneously, unlike your regional analogy, which is probably spending its time wondering if they should take 3 peanuts or 2 pretzels out of the little bags they offer as an in-flight snack. As pilots, we are not privy to El Picture Grande, and so when something happens, we are usually the last to know. That probably goes for our airline management too. Remember, the airline is a rather small portion of the overall picture, and I'd bet that even the VP of Flight Ops is preached to, and kept in the dark, a good deal of the time. Doesn't make it right. Just makes it the way it is. By the way, what with your extensive background in corporate structuring, maybe you could offer some suggestions as to how to run a more profitable company. I'm sure Fred would appreciate it.

Management? Planning? Crisis management? Remember the Christmas ice storm a few years back and what a cluster that was?
They've known this has been coming for a long time and in the end, they don't seem to have a plan. This was a problem they should have been planning for a long time ago. Certainly as soon as Ms Blakey-FAA Administrator made the government's plan to raise the retirement age clear.
