IPA solidarity with ABX Air/Astar pilots
from today's IPNN:
UPS PILOT UNION EXPRESSES SOLIDARITY WITH ABX/ASTAR PILOT GROUPS
LOUISVILLE, May 30, 2008 -- The Independent Pilots Association (IPA) today expressed its support for the pilots at two carriers currently flying the bulk of package volume for DHL within the U.S., Canada, and Mexico. Those carriers are ABX Air and Astar.
On Wednesday, UPS and DHL Express U.S. announced a tentative 10 year deal for UPS to provide transportation in its air network for all of DHL’s express, deferred and international package volume within the United States. Under terms of the agreement, not yet finalized, UPS would also provide air lift for DHL packages between the United States, Canada and Mexico.
If the agreement is finalized, it could mean a loss of pilot jobs at Astar and ABX Air and an increase at rival carrier UPS. “Our first reaction on hearing of the proposed deal was to ask UPS to give every consideration to any Astar or ABX Air pilot who might seek a job at UPS,” said UPS pilot union President Bob Miller. “We have worked with both pilot groups for many years, and their members are among the most skilled and professional in the industry,” he added.
Miller said that many UPS pilots have friends at the carriers and would like to see their company provide every consideration to any pilot from ABX Air or Astar who might seek a job with the carrier. “The pilots at ABX Air and Astar have a proven record of safely and efficiently providing service. Any problems at these companies have come from their management, not from the pilots,” said Miller.
“While we don’t have a sense yet of how many new pilot positions could potentially be created at UPS, we do know that there are no better qualified pilots in the industry than those who fly for ABX Air and Astar.”
The Independent Pilots Association represents over 3,000 airline pilots who fly domestically and internationally for United Parcel Service. The Union was certified in 1990 and is headquartered in Louisville, Kentucky.

I know of a lot of other highly qualified pilots who would love to work at UPS too. Why should ABX and Astar guys be given any advantage over anyone? It sucks, but the writing has been on the wall for them for a very long time.
I hope the best for those impacted, but I also don't want to see guys coming out of the USAF or those working overseas exculded due to preferential interviews.

Have you ever read the Dale Carnegie book, "How to Win Friends and Influence People"?
I understand your point, but if you have ever been furloughed, or out of a job, perhaps you would be a little more sympathetic to their plight. I have 2 very good friends at ABX, and I would do anything to help them get a job at my place of employment.

Please inform me on how you or any other UPS employees would be harmed by extending preferential interviews to myself or any of my bothers or sisters at ABX and Astar. If UPS does indeed require additional pilots due to this agreement with DHL then it would seem the right thing to do. Simular arrangements are common place in the industry. They were created after Eastern's demise as well as Pan Am's. I am sure that there are more examples but these are the ones that I am familiar with.
I thank Captain Miller and all then IPA professionals for their support. They have been valuable allies in our past contract negotiations. It will not be forgotten. Thank you again!

Thanks IPA and Capt. Miller
Much thanks and gratitude to the IPA and especially Capt. Miller for stepping up. I too was very outspoken of Capt. Millers original statement. Today he has proved me wrong. If we ever cross paths, I owe you an adult beverage of your choice.

1) UPS has rarely cared what IPA pilots (especially me) think
2) UPS doesn't have the fraternal instincts we do to begin with
3) UPS will move mountains and cut every possible corner to hire as few as possible including stuffing our lines and using cheaper non-union lift as long as the can get away with it and longer.
That being said, they'd be wise to hire people already doing the same job in much the same equipment with an enviable safety record just like they reached out to MD11 and 747-400 crews when they were hiring for ANC...it all makes good sense. But I will suggest that our hiring pool be drained first as they went after a job here in the first place.
