Albie....I have the utmost respect for you and have always been impressed with your ability to remain objective and rational when a lot of the rest of us babble about things we know little of. But damn bro, please tell me you are just having a bad day!

Albie, please attend the next ALPA HIMS training program. I think there is one in the fall.
There are abusers and there are addicts. The difference is addicts do NOT have a choice. The impulse is so deep into their primal brain they cannot control it. That is not psycho babble or from group therapy. It is medical fact.

Does UPS have any type of an employee assistance program? The article makes it sound like she was in and out of rehab for like 5 years, I'm not sure how that type of thing works maybe after a few (or 5) years of trying the company throws in the towel... I don't know. Terrible news.

Suffice it to say I'm not on the ALPA HIMS team. Glad we got some compassionate professionals. Let's just say I'm not the right guy for that job...

I don't know how long you've been on the civilian side of this job, and don't really care. But have you ever heard of a case where a guy you worked with needed help, and you knew him? To add to it, you were pretty shocked when you found out and never thought it would be him? It's only been two in my case. The weirdest thing was, there were BOTH good CA's, and I never would have thought they had those kinds of problems.
Granted, I have a hard time understanding addiction myself. Too bad we all can't be the perfect genetic specimen you are and lead the charmed life you have Albie.

When does the "NOT have a choice" begin? If I chose not to use meth, am I still an addict? If I use it once? Twice? If she had chosen never to use drugs...of any kind...would she still be alive? I feel sorry for her and her family but, you "DO have a choice" whether to use drugs.....and only then can you become an addict and "NOT have a choice". Any kind of addiction is a dead end street and it's just a sad state of affairs.

Albie & Mark,
Apparently, you do not have anyone in your family that is an addict. Yes, there are bad choices involved. But addiction IS a disease. There IS a genetic connection to addictive disorders. If you had a friend or loved one whose life (and the lives around them) were destroyed by addiction, perhaps you would see things in a different light. I'm sorry that your life is so perfect that you cannot express compassion for these circumstances. This woman had a family and friends that loved her, and now grieve for her. I hope you never have to experience this first hand. In the mean time, if you can't say anything nice....

Nothing quite like painting it with a BROAD brush with the word "anything". Good point, you could never be addicted to coffee or become a chain smoker, or even an alcoholic unless your mother was as stated above
