What's the best way to get a job w/ FDX?
 

What is the best way to get a job at FDX, other then knowing someone in the company. Would flying for MAC get someone in quicker then the average person, just because it is a FDX Feeder? I have an internship at PDT in May, and if I get hired with them, would it be adventagous to stick with them, or look for a cargo operation. Just curious.

I talked with a FDX pilot on the matter. He said that 'slinging' boxes would get me a job a little bit quicker then working for a FDX Feeder. This is simply due to the fact that a company like MAC is a contract operator, and working on the ramp, you are a FDX Employee.

If anyone has some food for thought, I would be interested to hear it. My flight instructor's uncle is a MD-11 FO and loves his job!...So it sounds like FDX may be the 'place to be.' Is FDX a good goal?

If you don't have three internal "friends" your hosed just trying to come in the front door.:eek: Of course, this is subject to change, and my guess is it will, when the pax industry turns around and Fedex has to compete with more airlines for pilots. The suggestion of throwing boxes is an excellent one if your still building time and can find a way to work part time at Fedex and build quality flight time. What ever you do, or who ever you (try) to work for, networking is a key to opening doors, especially at the places that are more competitive to get into. Good luck.:D

Get the PIC as FAST as you can.

If you can keep a flying job and work the ramp at FedEx at the same time, it might be worth a shot. If you meet the minimum requirements for a pilot position at FedEx, you will be eligible for an interview after working as a handler for a minimum of one year. I know of some folks who got in this way. The key is meeting the mins and getting a year of service under your belt. The only drawbacks are you have to keep flying. Recency of experience is very important for FedEx. Also, you have to keep your nose clean at your handler job with FedEx. When you go to interview for the pilot position, you need to have a supervisor who will give you a good recommendation.

FedEx is definitely a good place to shoot for. They have excellent stability in a very volatile industry. Good luck! :)

One of my college professors used to work at fedex, can't remeber doing what, I think air operations, but it was a pretty good position. She said fedex prefers to hire from within, even for upper level jobs. I remember she said a lot of good things about Fedex and made it sound like the company to work for.

I don't think many airlines allow pilots to keep second jobs officially so I would just work at fedex now start networking, fly at the regional or whatever flying job you have, then when the time comes to apply at Fedex call your friends for the recommendations. Good luck.

I had a friend who took a box thrower job in order to get a pilot job. Unfortunately he injured his back so bad he couldn't fly anymore. Just be careful!

I was at PDT from 89 thru 95. Go where you could get to the left seat as fast as you can and meet the required hours. Actually more than required because you are a civilian pilot (if this is your back round). Unless there is a flow through in place which does not guarantee much (this is my opinion) in my experience going to any of the feeders will hinder you more than help you.

Fastest way to Fedex?? 1) start building PIC turbine time by the age of 13. 2) Go to Naval or AF academy and become "star" of the football team. 3) Get drafted into the NFL. 4) Bypass the NFL because of "your complete love for flying cargo only aircraft. 5) Go as high up in your military career but bypass the Joint Chiefs postion because of your "love for flying cargo only aircraft". 6) join space program and get as many shuttle landings as possible. 7) State Senators endorsement(prefer Tenn. Sen.) 8) Send in application 9) Receive letter telling you to update your resume every 6 mos. 10) More shuttle landings.11) Receive interview and get hired 12) Spend long nights watching boxes get sorted and wonder what the NFL and Joint Chiefs positions would have been like. Listen to what this guy says! I've known a few guys who were internals, had all the requirements, but F'd up and made people mad. Be nice to EVERYONE!
