Third sort

A lot of the 2DA freight is carried during the NDA flights. If DHL has enought NDA freight, the excess 2DA freight will need to be carried sometime. ie, a third sort.

That would be a nice surprise, cause I don't see any evidence of new deliveries in the near term...

2nd day sort and bypass are running lite , we have a lot of first class mail being loaded, probably to fill the space. The package car drivers I have spoken with indicate that they are being told it will just fill empty space on the trucks, my driver finishes three hours earlier than she used to due to lack of volume( Sat ).
I doubt we will see any increase in block hours flown or aircraft beyond what has already been ordered.

Confirmation of what the other managers have already said. Just curious, are you Standards, or Training? Private replies respected

Neither, just a Line Captain. I watch what and how much goes in the back of my airplane, look at how hard they are pushing the sales leads not only with the flight crews but ground people and the over all economy.
One of the bigger indicators is my flights have been ready early out of the sorts which is generally a clear indication of reduced volume.

Domestic- The way to make the most money is load them to the hilt allowing domestic customers late drop off times. Minimize to no ferry time. Then fly as little as possible, save jets to be used 20 years longer than pax jet <g>, less mainteneance, fuel, etc. Make 10X in one leg what pax jets make in 12 hours of flying pax. Airplanes utilized very well for current business model. Optimized I think for best yield. Any extra flying would need to be supported by revenue. It isn't right now. We only exist to move whatever UPS cannot move by trucks and trains to meet customer delivery times. The airplanes domestically are extremely well utilized.

Yah, I'm talking internationally--think "rented mule."
Domestically--I don't do that, so I don't know...

Wow, my flights are hardly ever out of the sort early. In fact, almost every flight I have had this week has been late.

757upspilot 07-10-2008 10:23 AM

Really. I have been off this week. 2nd day system I move light aircraft with lots of voided positions. The only max blast Takeoff was an ACARS generated must do since the airplane hadn't had one in the required time period, we did this with an almost empty airplane. This would seem to indicate that we are not running full. We have lots of unused capacity in the domestic system which is where all the DHL stuff is going to go.

UPSFO4LIFE 07-10-2008 11:03 AM

We have day flying? Wouldn't know anything about that. Next Day system still running late as always. ;)

v2plus25 07-10-2008 10:11 PM

Even if the 2nd day flying is light, that's all 2nd day stuff. Isn't the DHL stuff they are paying us to carry their Express stuff? Next day air? Can't stuff that into 2nd day flying and keep anyone happy who's waiting for (and paid for) their DHL Express package.

The way I see it, the night sort is really gonna have to beef up and we'll need more capacity. There's not been many void positions (if any) on the night sort flights that I've been doing lately.
