This was in one of the chapters in either Big Brown or Driving change, I can't remember which one. The author basically used it as an example of the benefits of a closely held private company (UPS) vs. the publicly held FDX. In that both companies were investing in Europe. Both were losing money hand over fist. Eventually the share holders (read hedge funds and large banks) basically told FDX to stop the bleeding. So they pulled out of some markets and stopped investing in others. UPS on the other hand kept pouring money in. The author basically said that there was no way a public company could have invested so much for so long. In the end he praised the UPS management for taking the long view vs the quarter to quarter view that seems to be so prevalent in the current financial world. In the end UPS Europe operation continues to grow at a good pace returning handsomely on the investment.

I find it funny then that several months after a read the book and was excited about UPS's status as a privately held company that they took the company public.

Oh well.

I'm sure a FDX guy can correct me, but wasn't there an issue with the way that they served Europe as well? Wasn't their pull out on trans atlantic trunk routes and their re-emergence closer to the way that we serve Europe, a few trunk routes and an intra europe hub?

I do agree that there should be other language alternatives for those who maybe do not speak English well enough but it should be done in a different way than it is now. For example when you pay for something at Wal-Mart you should never have to chose 'English' on the credit card machine - that should be automatic.

Now if you do wish to use another language there should be several other options on the machine: Spanish, German, French, Mandarin, etc, etc. They should be able to press on a tiny Spanish flag for Spanish, or a German flag for German, etc, etc.
We should never have to select English first – ‘press 1 for English’ rules create rasism not prevent it.

We should turn Spanish into what it is - a ‘tourist language,’ maybe even an illegal tourist language – but one of many ‘tourist’ languages - a national language it should never become yet the press 1 for English rules legitimize Spanish as a semi official national language. That’d threaten to Balkanize the country where some part of the country would speak only Spanish while others use English - eventually it'd lead to secessionist moves and future referendums to leave the union (I'm talking 25-50 years down the road) – just like in Canada.

As someone born and raised in Europe I hope that one day we’ll have an amendment to our constitution and make English the official language of the US. Sometimes it may be heavily accented or maybe even grammatically incorrect however the English language IS the glue holding our melting pot together.

I have no idea what you mean by this...

It almost looks like UPS and Fedex are simply spreading the buyout rumors to jack up the price of TNT just to prevent the other side from buying TNT...

From our union news letter...

"Many of you may have read on IPNN Interactive on Monday, August 11 that UPS and TNT had held early stage talks for a possible acquisition of the Dutch mail and logistics group. We also asked the Company about that rumor. The Company said the reports were not true and referenced similar media stories that surfaced a few weeks ago that FedEx was in talks with TNT."

Sounds like some blogger is trying to raise the share price so that he/she can dump their holdings to me.

Who said individuals can't manipulate the markets!?

Disregard all the previous posts here, I am going to buy TNT! Lets see their stock react to that!
