FedEx Move Package for ANC?
I know how to get this solved: all commuters based in ANC should bid to either LAX or MEM on the next equipment bid. It would be better if ANC residents would do it too, but that's a bit unrealistic.
Facing the possibility of reverse bidding ANC, the company would cough up the funds for a move package. We're around 70% commuters, can you imagine the turmoil around the bid analysis table...?! |

You're right it'll never happen, but I thought it was an interesting idea.
A first year guy probably has a better chance of completing initial MD-11 training than an experienced FedExer. A new guy has more recent stick time and more than likely came from an electronic jet with FMS and glass. I've heard the guys who bust out of initial MD-11 school tend to be someone who has been away from the front seat for more than five years (SOs and SO LCAs) or real senior captains who have not been in an initial training class for years. But your point is valid regarding the risk new hires take; that's a lot to put on the line in case you don't make it! |
Plus, the pay is the same regardless.

Just to help ones that this might apply (pg163 on the pdf) 24.E.5.d If throught the application of Section 24.E.5.c (above), a junior pilot is activated into a crew position for which a senior pilot(s) did not have the opportunity to bid, the eligible senior pilot(s) shall be paid passover pay in the same manner described in Section 24.D.2.b..... |
It is true that new hires will be hand picked and assigned the MD-11. It's called the, (I kid you not), Purple Nugget Program. They have a new syllabus- there will be observation rides before the sims. This is why they are accumulating a pilot pool- they will pick out guys with glass/heavy experience for the MD-11.
Passover pay is a non-issue when compared to training costs. |

It might be comparing apples to purple oranges; however, I was hired at Gemini on the MD-11 and went through new hire training on it. It wasn't all that difficult and the airplane is a piece of cake to fly. Very transparent sytems and nice flying characteristics.
Some of the gouge stuff we had going through training was FedEx and UPS stuff. The MD-10/11 differences would be a pain but other than that, new hires should be able to handle it. So, Mr. Smith, I'm ready for my class date. Please contact me at your convenience. |
