FDX Substitution Question
Due to a Scheduling SNAFU... I ended up in SUB for a week-long pairing on the Boeing.
Now as I understand from reading the CBA, I have an initial availability (4 hours prior) and subsequent availability window (next day 1000-1600 LBT). And I understand that if CRS offers me an assignment, I will have the option to accept (trip guarantee) or decline the trip (OTP applies). Now.... if CRS offers me a trip of 1 or 2 days during the beginning of my window... can they "keep me on the hook" for the remainder of my SUB window and keep putting pairings back to back?... or .... Once I accept the first trip is that all I'm required to fly to get the trip guarantee for my week-long pairing? I know some folks out there have first hand experience with this. Thanks for the inputs! JP |

Thanks for the inputs! JP First, they have to offer you a trip in the IAP (initial availability period), if they do not you will be given 18 hours SUB credit AND released for 72 hours. Subsequent availability periods will follow the 72 hours off. Remember there are showtime requirements for trips offered in the follow on windows. ii. If his substitution window is greater than 72 hours, he shall be credited with 18 hours toward his substitution guarantee. He may not be given a substitution assignment with a showtime within 72 hours of the showtime of his original trip, and he has the following options: (a) elect OTP for the balance of his original trip guarantee; or (b) remain eligible for substitution Is your trip a daytime flying assignment ? If so check out 25.H.5.b When you "click" on the green line it will list all the relevant info as well. To answer your final question, you are not covered for the whole trip guarantee by accepting and flying just one trip. Trips >72 TAFB are more involved. Good luck ! |
Thanks for the reply!... I guess I missed that >72 hour and 18 hour credit when I read through that section.
And I never even thought to click the green line. That helped a lot and made a lot more sense. |
Basically you are on sub for R-B assignments for the week if you elect to stay in sub instead of the OTP. If you commute or if you live there, two very different options.

Long sub window is more like a highly modified R24 for day (s) 3+,
only have to answer the phone between 1000-1600, and have at least 8 hours to get to Memphis (12 hours for intl) |
Great inputs from everyone. I appreciate it! My Sub is almost exactly 7 days and I will be giving CE a call as the time gets closer. I'm a commuter so I think my game plan will be to fly as little of the sub window as possible with maximum guarantee and OTP the rest... But I'm sure most other people would have that strategy too. LOL. Thanks again!

tough question, SUB is very involved. If you have questions, call ALPA Contract Enforcement.
Good luck ! I called the company Gayle answered the phone and gave me an answer. The guys I pay won't call me, but the company will... |

Don't hold your breath. I called yesterday and was told David was there. Left him a message. 24hours later and no call back. Another guy said he'd be waiting 3 days and no call back.
