UPS or Fedex?
So I've always considered myself brown to the bone, at least since working as an aircraft loader for UPS in high school. This past weekend, I went with AHP to tour the Fedex facilities in MEM. I was extremely impressed by the entire operation. We stayed with an MD11 captain (and a former top gun), and he was speaking of some captains making over 400 grand a year there. Everyone seemed very excited about their jobs, from the crew right down to the sorters. I'm currently arranging a similar trip to SDF for a UPS trip in the fall. Of course 30 minutes in the MD10 simulator with a sim instructor at fedex was fun too. Handflying an MD10 to mins in blowing snow was a blast. My question to you guys (especially those who are currently working the line at UPS or Fedex), is whats the difference between the companies from a line pilot's perspective? What are pros and cons of each place? I'm not at all saying that I would turn one down, just curious to know what the general consensus is. Thanks...

I think in the end, if quality of life is important: go FedEx. If its money: go Brown. Thats the long and the short of it, in my humble opinion.

wow- another thread to try and cause ill feelings between the two strongest pilot groups in the airline industry.
i would say that the major difference between the two- uniform color. so ask yourself- which one-UPS or FEDEX- do you want to grace with your skills? sue |
Which ever base you live closer to!

400K by selling your soul back to the company, perhaps? Can you say burn out? WOW

Unless you know someone that has flown for both carriers everything is here say. From what I understand all things considered Fedex is better. In reality, There is a greater gulf between cargo and pax. then ups or fedex.
just my 2 dollars. |
can you say, "never home" ?
Never worked at UPS, but the previous poster was right on about how anyone at Fedex makes $400K. :(

The captain we stayed with at Fedex said the top captain at Fedex made 438 or something around there...it was well over 400 though. Also though, like was noted previously, much of that was either sim instructing for some guys, or being held overseas for one reason or another...its not like the guys are making 430 bucks an hour...just that they somehow get on the clock for much longer that the 80 or so they usually fly per month (from the way I understand it). Thanks for the input guys...
