Ohio taxpayers should be furious, but that's what Governor Strickland is doing.

From my understanding, the Governor of Ohio is developing a plan where Ohio will partner with DHL in order to bring costs down to beat the UPS arrangement.

They might as well.
Imagine if you were a UPS pilot who lived in Ohio, knowing that your Governor was spending your tax money to subsidize a German owned company to compete with UPS so you can get furloughed.
Truly unbelievable!

You know whats amazing. Untill this post it seemed that only a few of us guys on the bottom truly thought about furlogh. It seems the rest is just sailing through life and might wake up one day and say oh Sh!T. How is it that so many people can't see what might very well happen, especially the ones that will be effected. I think they have been sold "it can never happen at UPS" and truley believe it.
If you go on airUPSers.com and check out the profiles of new-hires from previous years. The majority of them stated their desire to work here is because of UPS's stability. I guess most will believe this all the way out the door? You almost never hear anyone talking about the F word in the cockpit. Although nothing has happened yet, UPS is still "stable". But when you're the bottom 10%, there's cause to be concerned.

9. It shall be a violation of this Agreement if the Association
engages in any action to encourage or suggest to its members
that they not pick up open time or decline junior available
assignments. This language shall not be applicable during a
time of furlough or furlough announcement. Further, it shall be
a violation of this Agreement if any crewmember(s) takes any
action, individually or collectively, to discourage or interfere
with other crewmembers who desire to pick up open time or
accept junior available assignments. Nothing in the preceding
sentence shall limit an individual crewmember’s ability to voice
personal opinions.
Here is the most important language in the contract to prevent furloughs and I am confussed by it. It is a little weak because it does not allow me to use the Louisville Slugger I bought in training on the knee caps of the selfish. The Teamsters would have never allowed this!

I mention it on every flight and the biggest denial usually comes from the over 60 guys and the captains. They really believe an open time ban would help prevent any furloughs. They also always tell me a furlough won't happen at UPS.

That just silly because many of the 2006-2007 newhires came from defunct airlines. Many had been furloughed from more than one airline in their careers.
I distinctly remember in my newhire class when someone from UPS said welcome to your last airline job and about 5 guys said yeah we have heard that one before.

An open time ban will not prevent furloughs. More flying will prevent it though.
I fully expect to lose my seat in 2009, and I am preparing financially. We are saving every penny and we are clipping coupons. We are also paying off as much debt as possible, because I have no doubt that I will be an FO again in 2009.
I don't want to get political, but a McCain presidency is likely, and this will not bode well for airline pilots or any union member for that matter.
Times look very bleak to me, indeed.
