Anyone commute to ANC from LAX?

What are the commuting options (year round) for guys based in ANC who live in LA?

Shared experiences / suggestions appreciated.

Thanks.

If you are senior to me, you have NO options.

Otherwise, you can go on NWA daily in each direction.

I'll be about 78% in ANC, so I doubt I'm senior to anyone.

Hoping I can hold reserve there, drop some days every month, and take off to LA. No idea though what it will actually be like 6 months from now when I finish space shuttle, I mean md-11, training.

Thanks for the NW tip, going to look at their time tables now. Any idea if any cargo carriers make that run? I doubt it, but it's nice to be able to have a "sure thing" seat.

Very difficult commute. Spent 9 hours in Seattle last week trying to catch that 2nd leg.

NWA is obviously not predominately a cargo carrier, but that flight between LAX and ANC is only cargo 74s. NW has 4 first class seats on the upper deck plus the jump in the cockpit. There are usually a couple of jumpseaters on that route, but I have yet to see a guy get turned away due to a lack of a seat. Nothing is a sure thing, but as far as jumpseating goes it's as close as it gets. That is until the base closes.:(

UPS goes ONT to ANC. I'm not sure of how many and how often, but it's a nice ride.

UPS1856 11-05-2008 04:18 AM

UPS0062 11/06/08 ONT ANC 0955 1505 M1F

GMT time daily, (weekdays). Pretty full ride heading that way due to all the ONT crews displaced to ANC.

You wont be able to drop:"insufficient reserves"

Be Careful on relying on the NWA(Delta) cargo flt to/from LAX. Rumor has it their freight ops may go the way of the Dodo.

You can ride FDX from LAX to ANC by transiting OAK or MEM.

Does FedEx have a IND-ANC flight. And if so, is it weekly?

TIA

I'm starting this commute in the coming months and it looks like there have been some changes in the past few years. It looks like the most consistent nonstop freight operator is Polar.

Can anyone share some insight on how one would get from the pax terminal to the Polar operation in ANC or LAX?

Any other options besides passenger airlines?

Fishfreighter 08-11-2011 01:46 PM

I think UPS operates a daily freighter ONT-ANC.

Yes, we do. Mon-Fri nights ONT-ANC, MD11. Leaves around 0200 local. Runs full of jseaters pretty often though.

OTOH, ANC-ONT is much easier. Two flights - an MD11 departs ANC around 1500 local, and a 747 departs around 1600 local M-F. Both (usually) leave with open seats, particularly the 747.

This may help.

Kalitta has flown out of ANC to LAX in the past. I don't know if they still do, maybe somebody flying for them could chime in.
