Default Talked to my UPS driver today

He said that he is slammed and that he already beat his record number of stops this year than he had last year. His exact quote was, "Slammed is an understatement!"

Remember this at the big meeting tomorrow in ANC. I wish I could go but, alas, I have to fly.

Ask your driver how much of the volume he is being slammed with is ground.

Yeah, I'll get right on that. I'll also ask him about his favorite movie and his favorite color too.

Great, another UPS pilot who feels that they are not needed by UPS. I guess the meeting will announce that they are selling all the airplanes and using ground transportation only.

Yawn.

Yeah, well you sound a lot like Don Creamer!!

Seriously, I have heard that several managers are sweating it right now. I wonder if UPS would attempt to furlough IPA pilots before laying off some managers.

I personally believe that neither group will be laid off, but it does make me wonder if those guys feel like they are on the chopping block.

LOL!! If Don knew you'd compared me to him, he'd kick your butt!! All kidding aside, and referring back to your earlier post, if you don't KNOW that UPS would kick you and the entire pilot group to the curb to save a dollar, ....I don't know what to say.

I think that UPS and every other corporation in the world today would kick any unnecessary employee to the curb to save a buck. That is their fiduciary duty to the shareholders, no?

Nope. Their fiduciary responsiblity to the shareholder is to ensure the long term viability of the company. This pilot group is the key to the biggest slice of the profit pie. SCS and the ground side are huge, but the only foreseeable growth is in the international sector, and as someone smarter than I has said, its hard to drive a package car across the Pacific. It would be shortsighted to even think of furloughing right now, but in the UPS corporate mentality, sharing the cost cutting pain is sometimes more important than actually doing the right thing. The furlough announcement in 01(?) was nothing more than OOPS sharing the pain. We still made nearly 1 Bil that quarter. Have a good night and have fun at the breakfast!

Hey UPS If you can't see that the aviation side of that place is extremely lucrative and from a profit standpoint just about as close to indespensible as exists in the english language then you are in trouble! The Chicken Little award goes to somebody. You guys are one of the few pilot groups that actually has some leverage and remember that when you have it all of management's postures and communications will be to the contrary, including a token furlough. It's in the Harvard MBA handbook.

IF there's a furlough I think it'll be IPA pilots only, most IPA pilots won't pick up any open time and I think they'll need all managers then to prevent any disruptions to the network.

FlyByCable - I believe you're a manager, correct? (at least one of your posts a while back made me believe so) - if it's not a state secret, has there been any speculation on mgmt furloughs? Tx.
