Dayton hub takeover?
Fedex and DHL are said to have their bids in on the soon to be vacant UPS hub in dayton. Is there any truth to this? And why would they want it?

Dayton has
Good long runways Good instrument approaches to all runways Good deals on rent for the facility Possible tax breaks Readily available labor force Excellent sorting facility Low density air traffic Numerous hotels with regular van service convenient to the airport Basically its a turn key operation that is hazmat approved. |
But what you don't know is this, UPS is going to totally dismantle and destroy the sorting system and all related infrastructure. All someone is going to get is a building shell. Scortched earth tactics if you will!

Already have a BIG facility in IND which is just up the road.........smaller one in ORD and a big one in EWR and a completely under utilized on in AFW. I certainly am not "a fly on the wall in the Board meetings (wish I was however!) and am not privy to the decisions..........But I see no operational advantage. DHL has one in Dayton and Fort Wayne( Old Airborne) same goes for them I imagine |
I was thinking the same thing too redeye, but the FedEx "suits" have been in the hub along with DHL people quite alot in the past few weeks. Not to mention that they make sure they steer clear of the workers when they tour the building. Lots of activity going on but they won't tell us anything. Plus we are doing some major cleaning up in the hub that we haven't done in years. Even down to painting the floors.

It could be just a mgt ploy to make UPS MGT think they (FedEx and DHL MGT) are interested. You know to either try to make UPS keep it..........a cost for them if it sits Idle...........or the Cost to dismantle it to keep DHL ot FedEx from really wanting a scrapped hub sort facility................... Who knows, but from a line guys perspective, I don't think we really want it or need it..............I've stopped trying to figure out what mgt is really doing. But in our case, our Mgt is making lots of money for the company so I won't second guess them................. |
If what Brown tail says is true about dimantling the facility, why would anyone want to rent real estate?
|
Well we are not dismantling any parts of the building, we are just sending the forklifts that we're repainting, office equipment, and tugs and dollies to louisville. A supervisor that transfered to the louisville hub from dayton has been calling during the operation stating that they are having major problems getting huts across the balldeck, forklifts drivers that are taking between 10-25 minutes to take 1 skid of freight out of a hut,(yes that what the super told us)and they dont understand the as400/emcon2000 entry work on the computer. Then they said that they might need people to stay after the june 30 closing date. But i do hope someone comes in and uses it so we can keep our jobs.
