Vote "I support"

I have read everything that has been published by the MEC and the Negotiating Committee, and the most recent letter from the Negotiating Committee Chairman. This is an opportunity to make gains that are not offset by any other bargaining, and it's an opportunity for us to demonstrate that we stand behind the negotiating committee.

As much as I at first thought I would not vote for it until it was wrapped in a contract, I am now convinced that it is a win-win for us. The message from the Union is clear - - vote for the LOA. No mixed message, no hidden agenda, no hidden motives. Straight up, plain and simple, it's a good deal. Let's take it.

We can also send a message that "Yes, my negotiating committee REALLY does speak for me." They want us to vote yes, I say we vote yes. What message will it send the company if our union wants us to vote yes on something and then we all vote no?

Exactly - - it's more than a bag tag.

I meant, how do we physically vote for the loa, not what I should vote.

I can't remember, but if you're on probation you may not be allowed to vote. No dig intended but I seem to recall a pilot in his first year with the company is not a full paying member and therefore cannot vote, and yet I might be wrong.

But if you have not yet received your ballot by now and you're still on probation, that might be the reason. If you cannot get access to the ballot as explained above, call the union and ask about it.

A question from the pool. How do you guys feel things will play out if they do send new hires to ANC? More specifically, will the letter say "you are selected for MD-11 FO training, class date is ........, you will be assigned ANC", or will the base be assigned after training. I know its a rookie question, but will all this talk about an LOA, curiosity has gotten the better of me. Also, is there anyway to get the basics of the LOA? Thanks.

My guess is that you wouldn't have a base assigned or offered until you complete training. For training purposes you're based in MEM. If they send you off campus (they're going to use the Boeing sim in Long Beach, CA and the Lufthansa sim in FRA is also probable) then they provide hotels and the appropriate per diem.

I have no idea how to provide you with a copy of the LOA. But I would point out that it is what it is. If you go to work for FedEx you'll be bound by it regardless of whether or not you like it. I will also tell you that it's much, much better than what we have now. In my humble opinion it's a pretty good deal. Are you swimming in the pool?

I'm sorry. With all the methods of communication that ALPA has been using, it didn't occur to me that you didn't know how to cast your vote. Are you getting emails? You should visit the ALPA website frequently to make sure you're up to date on the latest events. You should most definitely be reading the Negotiations Updates. Make sure ALPA has your correct e-mail address so you can have these delvered to your personal account.

Since it has never happened before, any offer of details can only be conjecture. Typically newhires are given their choice of seat positions during their first week of training, and if there is more than one choice, it's determined by seniority bidding. If the intention is to send an entire class to the right seat of the MD-11 at ANC, I imagine that would be announced during the first week of training. If that intention is determined well ahead of time, it's possible that you might receive some sort of advanced notification, but I doubt anyone would be so bold as to make such a prediction.

My advice is just bring your A game to newhire training, and take what you can get.
