ABX furloughs
Man, the bad news keeps rolling in. I just got this from a good buddy there. I would like to express my continued support of all ABX and Astar pilots during these troubled times.
Message from President Dave Ross:
We met with the company last evening to discuss their furlough plan. As you know, we will park our last DC-9 on the 31st of January. The company's end vision for crew staffing is 230 active crew members and a total 27 either on LOA or in management for a total number of 257. That is based on 22 767's operating for DHL with a crew ratio of 3.6 per aircraft and 7 767's in charter work with a crew ratio of 5.0 per airplane.
To attain that number, the following is the surplus and furlough schedule proposed by the company:
-Surplus 85 DC-9 crewmembers effective 31 January 2009.
-Surplus 38 B767 Captains effective 1 January 2009.
-Furlough 157 effective 16 February 2009. That WARN Notice will go out tomorrow the 18th.
-An additional 126 crewmembers will receive notification of ANTICIPATED furlough tomorrow the 18th. These letters will include estimated dates, and they plan to send out WARN Notices 60 days prior to furlough date.
We have an issue with the low surplus number on the DC-9 and the inclusion of an "anticipated" furlough notice which is not contractual. We are currently in discussions with the company to work through these issues.

Here's the breakdown. There are 33 pilots already notified for the 1/15/09 furlough plus another 283 will be day notified 12/18/08 which puts 316 pilots out of 657 on the street with more furloughs to come. The company says they only plan on keeping 230 pilots. That's around the 16 year seniority group.
I hope you guys and gals at UPS and Fedex or any other airline don't ever have to deal with this nightmare. It's my first furlough and the stress is incredible. Like many others, I have a family to feed and bills to pay . I've cashed in investments, refinanced the mortgage, and got the wife a job. For those of you that have experienced a furlough, I sure would appreciate any advice or tips on getting through this. If you would prefer to PM me that's okay. Thanks.

Red,
I've been there and I feel your pain. I had a home with a reasonable mortgage payment,a working wife and a Naval Reserve job. We managed just fine even with a young-un in private nursery school.
Fortunately, I had some real (non-aviation) marketable job skills and found a real job for several years. I maintained my aviation proficiency in the Reserves. I liked my non-flying job. I was home almost every night. Like I said, we managed just fine. You can too, keep your head up. It'll work out.
Many of us have been there and come out of the other side of the bad situation. I also had reserve buds (like they say ... network, network, network) with family businesses offering me work if I needed it. I didn't need it but REALLY appreciated the offers ... it was nice to be able to turn down crummy aviation job offers

Once again, what's the exact definition of "surplus"?? If parking all of the DC-9's, won't many 9 captains bump into the right seat of the 767 - and create a huge amount of training events?? Are they furloughing in seniority accordingly?? Any word on severance?? As a pilot for a sister company (and one who has recently lost my job twice in a 6 month period) my heart goes out to each and every family - especially during this holiday season.
