Yeah, it's one of ours. A good guy.

BOYCAPTAIN 01-31-2009 06:35 PM

super great guy!....very sad!...

av8rmike 01-31-2009 08:46 PM

A rare combination of talent and humility. He was an exceptionally gifted pilot, the best kind of instructor you could hope to have, generous to a fault and a truly great guy to hang with. My prayers are with his family. Fair winds, my friend.

Slice 01-31-2009 09:16 PM

I met said pilot through a mutual FDX friend in ANC in Oct. It was a pleasure to drink and dine with him that day...RIP.

Intlpilot 01-31-2009 09:26 PM

please disregard . . .

Slice 01-31-2009 09:32 PM

I was told in confidence by my friend and asked not to release info since it was unsure if all required family have been notified. Sorry.

Laughing_Jakal 01-31-2009 10:43 PM

No FCIF yet. For those that know...is a pm possible. I know a couple of guys that fly out of Olive Branch.

flextodaline 02-01-2009 04:48 AM

A pilot's pilot, a consummate professional, a great guy to just hang around with, and a great friend. He will truly be missed. Please pray for him, and his family.

If it is who I think it is, then we have lost a great guy. Laid back and fun to fly with.

Can somebody PM me with the identity of the pilot, or at least the initials? I have a lot of buds in the training department, but haven't gotten a hold of them all to see if they are OK.

Thanks

Convair.

eaglefly 02-02-2009 06:05 AM

What exactly happened and what was he flying ?

kronan 02-02-2009 07:02 AM

will take at least 4 days to figure out exactly what happened.

look up General FCIF 09-0067 if the link doesn't work.

Not sure why kronan thinks it will be at least 4 days ... but nothing on the NTSB website yet (nothing on the NTSB website after 1/24 yet)?

New Information in Fayette County Plane Crash|ABC24-CW30 Eyewitness News | Memphis, TN

While every aviation mishap is investigated, only major accidents get the full NTSB treatment (or those the NTSB deems important enough-JFK Jrs or Cory Lidle's for example).

The plane was reportedly a 1972 Bellanca.
From eyewitness testimony, it seems likely a loss of power resulted in the crash. But, could just as easily have been a stroke and the airplane was fine.

I'm not sure that's correct?

From the NTSB Investigation Guide:

The NTSB investigates and reports on all U.S. air carrier accidents, commuter and air taxi crashes, mid-air collisions, serious mishaps involving public use (government) aircraft and all fatal general aviation accidents.

kronan 02-02-2009 11:43 AM

But it is extremely unlikely to be a full bore, lab support, computer model type mishap investigation.

Much more likely to be a single IO

FAA investigation and the NTSB report

Most general aviation accidents are investigated by the FAA. The NTSB uses the FAA's input to write a report. In the case of a high profile (JFK jr / Cory Lidle) or unusual accident, the NTSB will get involved with the legwork. cub

steel 02-02-2009 04:10 PM

I think all aviation accidents are investigated by the NTSB. I'm not sure, but I think they classify them as either fields or limiteds. The field types are usually (due to cost) limited to Fatal/serious injury/accidents of interest (i.e. V-tail bonanzas/Malibu's). The limited types are investigated from the desk via the telephone. I think the NTSB ASI may use the FAA as a source of evidence in the investigation by speaking to them over the phone or in person. And I'm pretty sure when the ASI's report is complete, it is sent to D.C. for their recommendation, which usually goes along with the content of the ASI's report.

A go team usually gets assigned to the high priority cases (JFK Jr/Valujet everglades/etc)....

We lost a brother and the focus should be on him, his family, and loved ones, not on FAA/NTSB roles in the ensuing investigation. Demonstrate your knowledge (or lack thereof) elsewhere.

Most excellent individual, got my initial Line Check from him after A300 checkout, three years ago. Insightful, caring and GENUINE man. I had a chance to visit him later at OLV airport hangar, check out his restored Ercoupe and it was pretty clear to me, that this guy was in love with Flying airplanes ..........The Memorial Service was proper and reminded me of how much I take for granted every day.
