Latest on UPS and IPA furlough prevention

Discussions on Pause While
Study Intensifies
Representatives of the Company and the Association did not meet today in order to allow both sides additional time to study voluntary leave, voluntary work schedule reduction, and voluntary retirement concepts in greater detail.
“The discussions have moved into an important new phase. We have moved beyond general concepts and now are getting into details,” said IPA President Bob Miller. “Working through these details will take time, and ultimately will determine whether or not we can succeed.”
Miller said the EB is aware that members are intensely interested in the outcome of the talks.
“We are keenly aware that hundreds of our members are facing a possible furlough, status downgrade, or forced domicile change. While we want to keep you informed, we know that our best chance of success will come by focusing our efforts on creating alternatives to furloughing. Right now, we do not have an agreement, and we are not in a position, at this point, to make a prediction. It’s too early,” he added.
Miller said the study period could go into Friday, into the weekend, and possibly into next week.
“We are not going rush. The Board is determined to methodically work through every issue in an attempt to reach a workable solution.”

I don't recall any discussions taking place prior to my previous furloughs. Time is on our side, have faith.

The thing that bothers me is last week I had to read that IPA email from BM 3 times. Upon first sight the letter looked as if we were not going to be furloughed. Upon closer analysis I learned that it was BM's "OPINION" that there should be no furloughs with volunteer LOA's, possible retirements, military leave etc. I laughed hysterically after that because in the past two years UPS has not listened to or done anything the IPA has suggested about staffing even when it would have saved them money. So why will they now?

Now maybe I am reading into today's IPNN a little too much, but BM seems a little more realistic and alot less chest thumping. Hoping for the best expecting the worst.

Bingo
Not only that, they will often do the opposite just to show the inmates exactly who is running the asylum

I agree. I will be utterly astounded if they don't put a few of us on the street, if only for a while to prove they can. It may, ironically, even end up costing them money. But you figure those bottom guys displaced to the panel with no training date are basically freebies for them on the chessboard. They have to incur those training costs anyway, so putting them (us) out for even a few months to make the point, then calling back for training (of some kind) doesn't cost them really any more than our good will, which let's be honest, ain't high among many in the first place.

It's a shame for me to see this developing in you guys. Not that I blame you one bit, but we all shared your excitement on this board when you got hired.

I always hope for better relations and treatment for each new generation of pilots that gets hired here, but it never seems to happen.

You guys will still have long careers here, but you will never forget this, even if the threat does not come to pass

I agree, it is a shame that we work for an employer that treats its employees this way. I know I know, many companies do the same thing, but THIS company does not have to. UPS is not a struggling company guys. In fact, they will be an even stronger company when the recession ends, and it will end probably sometime this year.

Some of you guys sound like a bunch of women, rationilizing and reasoning based on emotions and feelings.

This isn't about feelings and emotions, its business-its about earnings, balance sheets, investor confidence, and head count. Head count is too high, it will be reduced.
